pull-out hidden cutting board.
Comments (12)I currently have partial overlay cabinets with a breadboard. I think the same thing would work with full overlay. The drawer front is split. The top few inches are attached to the breadboard and the remainder of the drawer face attaches to the real drawer. The board and drawer operate independently. The doors in this kitchen all have that undercut finger pull space which full overlay won't, so you'd need a handle, but it should work. I wouldn't do it with light colored cabinets, though. Mine are light and it looks like the drawer front is split (which of course it IS). I don't think it'd be very visible with darker cabinetry....See MoreAre cutting boards out?
Comments (30)If you're buying cupboards from a mass manufacturer, be sure to read the fine print so you understand what is implied by their breadboard/cutting board unit. Some of the cabinet companies sell a cutting board unit that fits inside a cabinet, much like a drawer inside the cabinet. You open the door, pull out the board on its runners, lift it and place on countertop, then shut the cupboard door. Go figure. If you need to use two hands to get the thing out, why not just store it in a tray slot with your cookie sheets? It would be cheaper and would function roughly the same way. Other companies have pull out cutting board units on rails that cannot be used for hard usage, ex. for pounding meat. The old fashioned breadboard is almost as deep as the cupboard unit and you don't pull it out all the way. It's the cabinet frame that counterbalances the force you are going to put on the board. If it's installed properly, it can take a lot of force. You can attach a crank food grinder or an apple corer onto it. You can pound on round steak and you can butcher a deer. You can knead dough and push hard with a rolling pin. There should be no need to scold a child for pulling down on it--it's not going anywhere. When one side is starts looking disreputable from long use, turn it over and use the other side. When that side's disreputable also, go buy a stock replacement breadboard from a lumber yard or such. The board's housing will be waiting for it. Look at Belasea's breadboard in her "tiny kitchen." Comments (12)Angie, that's a good idea. I bet the cutting board could be modified. Although, it's a pretty wide lip underneath, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I am 3 hours away from my sink or I would go take pics. Marti, your sink & board have not come in yet ? My board has a groove routed around the edge of it to catch liquids and they drain into the sink at a semi-circle that you use to lift the board off the sink. I have the S405D. Which sink are you getting ? I don't know if all of the cutting boards have this same drain groove. Here is a pic I found online. See on the topside of the board how there is a drip catch routed groove all the way around, leading to where it can drain into the sink. This looks like the S6502 or S6512. Comments (40)I have always loved Houzz and used their pictures as inspiration for my kitchen reno, however, it was GW that helped me pull it all together. I got actual sources, advice, support and, dare I say it, "love" from GW. A totally different thing from what I've used Houzz for. This merger doesn't make sense to me, unless Houzz was somehow worried about the power GWers had on large purchasing decisions. If you like the GW enough to buy it; then let it be. It wasn't broken. Thanks for the opportunity to say my piece....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
