Air switch and air gap question
Comments (20)Your GC doesn't know?! Make him call/visit the permitting authority and ask. Give him the DW model and a copy of the install sheet (I think that's where Miele puts the info) explaining why how the Miele works negates the need for an air gap. Make him earn his money by finding this out for you since he should know. If he won't do it, go in yourself armed with the info. Write down what was told to you and by whom along with the date you visited. That way when inspection is done, you have back-up if inspector questions it. Sorry....I GC'd my whole house reno so I feel the homeowner is entitled to know the laws. Side note: My municipality supposedly enforces the make-up air requirement, like most states do, for range hoods over 400cfm. I put in a 600cfm beauty and no one along the inspection path ever asked me about it at all, other than to admire it. I was a bit worried, but it turned out fine. I was really quite shocked at how little the final inspector looked around and enforced code. My island outlets weren't to code, but the inspector never once looked at them. It was a cursory 5 minute glance through my house, and he was gone. Long story short--your inspector might not even care about the air gap....See MoreShow me your pull-out cutting boards, pls
Comments (26)jasdip, that's exactly what our cab designer and KD said but it's good to hear from someone who's had this set-up. Thanks. nightowlrn, our current one is just above a drawer and AFAIK, there isn't a divider between the two of them. We haven't had an issue with crumbs in the drawer below. But good point, the first set-up could have crumbs going into the drawer from the front of the board. I'll keep that in mind when I plan what's going to go in the drawer below it. 60 yrs old? Wow, sippimom! Thanks for the pic and the advice, , live_wire_oak! So that board is just hiding behind the drawer front but not really resting on the drawer sides, right? So you have to pull open the drawer and then the cutting board? How hard is it to pull the cutting board out to wash it in the sink? Once it was planed down, that is. :) DH and DS2 aren't good about cleaning the board off regularly so I pull it out to scrub it down with hot soapy water regularly and if it's really bad, I'll use a mild bleach solution on it (they don't cut meat on it but they will cut fruit and bread on it). I've talked until I'm blue in the face but they haven't changed their habits and likely won't. That's one reason why I almost didn't include one in the new kitchen but then I realized that I use ours regularly and not having one would be like cutting off my nose to spite my face. :)...See MoreHoned vs. Polished cararra, my experience so far...
Comments (3)I am at the countertop decision phase and it is killing me. I want soapstone perimeter and carrera island. Both have MAJOR issues but I love "the look." I feel like if I chose (ex. honed jet mist granite) it would be an imitation of soapstone look even though I know granite is natural stone etc... I am tempted to hone and antique the finish of my (not yet mine) 5 cm. carrera and then pour tomatoe juice over it and call it a day. An architect friend did this and it greyed the marble, but it looks AMAZING over her tobacco green cabinets! I am also debating between off white or gray cabinets. Anyone out there have gray cabinets? Also person who used carrera what did you use on your island. THANKS!...See MoreBest and worst of your kitchen?
Comments (30)We remodeled our kitchen three years ago and I love everything about it. It's not perfect because I had to work within the footprint I had but I did a pretty good job designing a new one if I must say so myself. It's hard to pick out a best thing but if I had to, I would probably say the refrigerator drawers. We had to put in a counter-depth French door refrigerator and the only place for it was on the other side of the island...not too convenient. I countered that little piece of inconvenience by putting in refrigerated drawers on the island. I keep all the fruits and veggies in the top drawer and drinks in the bottom. Everything that requires food prep is right at my fingertips. If I had to pick out a worst thing, it would probably be the island outlet. Because of all the drawers in the island, the only place to put the outlet was on the back side of the island. It would have been more convenient on the side but it wouldn't fit. It's only a problem when I use my Kitchen Aid mixer, requiring me to walk around and plug it in. Not such a terrible thing since I don't use the mixer that often anymore. I went from a U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula cook top to a center island with six feet of pure work space. I love, love, love it!...See Moreformerlyflorantha
