Hardwood Floor Color...

We are updating the last few rooms of our 1970s colonial. The house had no hardwood when built, except for the center staircase. We added red oak flooring with clear finish in part of the downstairs several years ago, and our main stairs, upstairs hall and bedrooms have the same. We are now looking to install hardwood in our dining room, hall and living room on the first floor. This area is separated from the other 1st floor hardwood space by the kitchen, which has ceramic tile.

The natural red oak stairs are in the middle of the new space where we will install hardwood.

Our dilemma: We are working with decorators who are encouraging us to go with a darker stain on the new floor. We like the look of the dark stain, but our gut is telling us it would be out of sync with the existing natural red oak elsewhere in the house. If we were to go with the brown, we'd likely also refinish the stair treads to match.

We're interest in opinions: Should we stick with one finish throughout? Are we being overly concerned about mixing finishes?

Thanks for any thoughts!
