Wall Oven and Column Fridge Freezer Combo to go with Bluestar or Wolf

I have been looking at appliances for our kitchen remodel. I would like to go with either a Wolf or Bluestar 36" range. I would like to also do a column fridge freezer combo (around 30" each"), a wall oven micro combo and a dishwasher. I would like to be able to invest in the range cooktop, but save a little on the other appliances. Does anyone have an suggestion of other appliances that will pair well? Frigidaire Gallery makes a nice column series with a trim kit for about 80% less than I was quoted on the subzero columns. However I am unsure how well they will pair. I am hoping someone else has accomplished something similar. Thanks for you time!

Hi Kimberly,

Great questions. I understand what you're trying to accomplish and would be happy to give you some input.

In regards to the column refrigeration, going with the the Frigidaire branded columns is something I see many people do (when you don't want to spend $12-14k for the sub-zero's).

That said, I would not recommend the Frigidaire "Gallery" series, and instead suggest you look at the Frigidaire "Professional" Series. The difference between the two series is in aesthetics of the door fronts. The Professional Series will have the 'Pro-Style' handle, which matches MUCH more closely to the Wolf/Bluestar range handles. I also think the surrounding trim kit accessory blends in much more with the pro-style handle than the Gallery series, which uses a flat curved handle (more euro style). Two bits of info you should keep in mind when purchasing these:

1) The Frigidaire columns are not 30" wide like Sub-Zero... they are actually 32" wide (each). The trim kit will also add to the required width cutout in the cabinet. So if you want to install them side by side with the trim kit, your cabinet opening width needs to be a total of 66". Important that the cabinet maker knows this as it can alter the design/plans they came up with so far.

2) The stainless steel doors on the Frigidaire (gallery or pro) is Finger-Print Resistant.

While this is no doubt a wonderful feature, the color of the stainless will be noticeably different than the stainless color of the Wolf/Bluestar (or any other brand. If the fridge/freezer are on a wall by themselves, without any adjacent appliances, you wont notice this really. But if you have another appliances right next to them you will definitely notice it. "Mind over matter", if you dont mind, then it don't matter! : )

Frigidaire Professional does not make a 'pre built, all-in-one' micro/oven combo..but they do make them as separate units which you can install directly above and below each other.

You would have a small 1-2" piece of cabinet between them but it achieves the same thing.

I recommend you consider these so that you have them match the fridge/freezer.

For the dishwasher..to be honest I am not a huge fan of the Frigidaire dishwashers. I've seen issues with them ranging from noise complaints to service issues and it's not something I would buy having the choice. You are better off buying a 'Panel-Ready' dishwasher which accepts a wood panel (that the cabinet maker orders) as the door front. It hides the dishwasher completely and you don't need to worry about matching it now with the stainless/handles of other appliances. Go with Bosch or Miele for the brand dishwasher. Both are rated incredibly well and are designed to take a wood panel and sit flush with the cabinetry (so you wouldn't even know it's a dishwasher at all!) Bosch will be less expensive by a few hundred dollars than the Miele without sacrificing quality.

Hi Kim,

I'm not sure about the details surrounding your remodel but if you opt for panel ready versions of your fridge/freezer and dishwasher then you really don't have to worry about the matching problem, although it probably won't help keep the costs down.

You got an excellent bargain on the oven. Do call Gaggenau and see if they'll honor the warranty. Congrats! Mine was FedEx'd from England. I think it was $70 U.S. duty, plus $5 for FedEx to handle the paperwork. Since you'll be carrying yours as luggage, you should be paying (if it hasn't changed) according to the following equation, with the price in U.S. dollars of your cooktop being X: duty=.03(X-800) That should be a lot less than import duty. That is, assuming that there isn't special duty on hand carried electronics or some such. If there's VAT in Germany, ask the store if you can have it waived since you're taking it out of the country. I don't know if you've seen the caveats. For your self-imported cooktop, you should get a letter from your insurance company saying that they know it's European rather than UL approved and that that doesn't affect your policy (mine said so long as it was installed by a licensed electrician). Also, you should make sure your building codes don't specify UL. If they do, you'll need a waiver. The Euro certification is just as good as UL, but you want to make sure that you have all the bases covered so they can't use a technicality to weasel out of the help you'd be given if there's a fire or something (like from a lightning strike). I'm also in California but local codes and inspectors vary. Do check with the airlines about the measurements they allow as well. It should be fine. My cooktop would fit, with its original box, into my old large pullman suitcase. I'm not sure about the newer ones, but it's the three dimensions added together they go by, with a maximum diagonal, so I think that part will be fine. Actually, if you have an old large pullman case, you might consider taking it, with some old towels or rags, and bring home the cooktop in the case, with the cloth for padding, instead of having to get an outer box and peanuts. Worse comes to worst, you can always send it FedEx. :)

Since you asked for views, I will say for the hundredth time how much I love my Bosch induction top, and it was not expensive. My kitchen designer pal says she is installing almost no gas ranges and that gas is over, from a design and utilitarian perspective, or will be in another 5 years as the US trails the EU. Young people want a sleek, clean look, and they demand energy efficiency. I can highly recommend Bosch dishwashers but racks vary so look them over. Decide, too, if you want that upper third rack. I liked my old Bosch's racks better but no disputing the quiet cleaning power of a Bosch. We went with panel ready, so there's another decision for you. It adds weight to the door but I love the look. Bosch ovens are excellent, too, and doubles are fab if your kitchen is large. I did not have room as I use a warming drawer a lot and my kitchen is small by GW standards. Too small for 2 large ovens + drawer. I was warned here to think carefully whether I really needed two, and to consider a Breville as backup, and boy has that worked well for me. (I roast a lot but rarely bake.) Our oven and WD are Electrolux Wave Touch - much beloved here -- and they are awesome. The WD will slow cook wonderfully. No comparison to my old KitchenAid I thought I wanted the micro drawer for its looks but that required me to give up my cat food prep space. (Nooo!) So we stacked ours like gooster ( except lift up) and I love it. Here is a pic. But we use the micro once per day on average so where it was stationed didn't matter to us. YMMV. This does give flexibility in size and brand you can use since, as has already been pointed out here, micros fail alarmingly. Still, if you have space, or if your kids will be using the micro, go for the drawer, or are least something lower. Fridge? Good luck. I hate mine. Electrolux. Everyone seems to hate their fridge. We went with a basic because all my friends with SZ spend their days waiting on the repairman. Seriously. My appliance guy, trustworthy, says get Liebherr. I don't know. Trust the folks here to guide you -- and study AJMadison. Good luck!

Many of the wall ovens vent to the front so I don't think a wall oven is a problem. There does seem to be some variance in how much heat is released and may be due to how well they are insulated. I have had two brands in my wall space in the last several years. The Electrolux that I have now does not put as much heat into the kitchen. With a range, a gas oven vents much more heat than the electric ovens do. 2. I have read about the porcelain chipping in the wall ovens. Is that true for 2013? If you search on this forum you will find that this is an ongoing problem. It is hard to tell how wide spead these issues are. In my area(small market), Wolf has replaced other liners to ranges but you don't read about it that much online with the ranges. The wall ovens in the future from Wolf will have a replaceable bottom and you would want to make sure you get that if you choose a Wolf oven. The range will not have that. I have the Wolf DF range and the porcelain has failed a little after four years. They cannot give a fixed estimate for a repair and just the labor starts at $800. They will only warranty the new liner for one year. It would seem that since this has been an issue, they would do better than that. I don't think the blue chips are fixed but they are making it easier to repair. It is a shame because there is no other range with an oven like that. I'm thinking 36" Dual Range OR 36" Cooktop Double Wall Range Those packages come out to roughly the same price. Trying to make the numbers work!! I would go for the components. You can pick exactly what you like and if one goes, it can be replaced. I have a very expensive storage cabinet at present. It is not safe to have food cooking with glass shards flying around. Appreciate any advice. I've looked at every brand and keep coming back to Subzero and Wolf . If you want Wolf range, I would go for the all gas because the enamel is not blue. I would buy the longest extended warranty you can get if you buy something with a lot of electronics or any type of blue porcelain. I have had blue enamel failure with Dacor, Electrolux and Wolf, all in different ways. Dacor was bought back for multiple issues, Electrolux was fixed under extended warranty and Wolf I am out. The dealer told me Wolf would stand behind their product and I would not need an extended warranty. This was true because they have replaced double ovens 4 years old with new ones for $500 for someone on this forum. They don't do that anymore. I was a big fan of Wolf until this happened. One reason I bought that range was the supposed "peace of mind"---HA!

I can count on one hand the amount of time I have had both of my full size oven going at once - when I'm baking a ton of cookies? Some cookies bake fine in a convection oven. You might have to play with the timing, but you're going to have to learn new times/temperatures/settings with any new ovens because there's more variation in ovens than other appliances. You've answered your own question. If you don't have both going at once other than for cookies--and you should be able to bake cookies on multiple racks in both new ovens--then you won't miss the second regular oven. You will love the combi-steam. The question you should be asking is about optimal placement and height. By having two separate ovens, you can tweak that to suit you best. You don't have to stack them, or you can adjust the height of the stack.

We're very happy with our Bluestar electric wall oven. We didn't replace the fridge during the last remodel.
