Backsplash options in Master bath

Where should the granite backsplash start and stop? Along the pony wall? I have a little dressing nook, should a backsplash go there to complete the visual? On all 3 sides or just the back? Thanks. Forgive if this is a duplicate posting!

Let’s start with your color choices first. What style are you going for?

What exact granite? If you haven’t firmly chosen the granite, choosing a mosaic backsplash may lead you to a coordinating granite or quartz counter top, and coordinating tile for the shower.

What surfaces will will be used in the shower? This probably should drive most of this design train. Will you install shampoo niches? If they can be installed on left side inside shower the clutter will be out of site.

What color cabinets? (Consider two small drawers for makeup at bottom of corner counter cabinet, shallow drawers work well here.)

What flooring will be installed?

Is this an operating window?

Basic answer:

Dressing area- backsplash 3 sides.

Vanity area- back only if have little time for details........ Do the sides if you can pull it all together.

Granite on top of shower ledge truly depends on all of your color choices. If colors are monochromatic any design gaps are not notable. If colors are dark and light this could be jarring.

Do do a google search for pony wall showers. An amazing amount are posted. Here are a few I found.

I'm gong for a more elegant look with a fairly monochromatic flair. My granite is a whitish background with gray and brown specs. I want that to be more of an accent. I was going to go with a 3" backsplash but since it's pretty thick 4" will look more balanced. I think I might just do the backs of the wall and not do the sides. Trying to simplify the granite. Would that work? The pony wall ledge will be tiled.

I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess.

Have you considered wallpaper? You can bring in color, as well as a design, if that's your 'schtick'. Just throwing another consideration in the mix. I personally *hate* a backsplast covered in tile or granite from countertop to bottom of cabinets, or even further up. I've gone *about* 3/4 up the wall, with the remained just the neutral color thruout the rest of my home, but only on the interior cabs, so above the stove and sink areas. On the perimeter bank of cabinets, it's just a painted wall, where I had planned to use wallpaper, but haven't done so yet. I also picked up at an auction a painted canvass, which is long and narrow, and thought of using it here. It's a vintage French scene of a girl feeding chickens in a barn, done in dark colors, which is my preference. I just don't want to leave it should I sell. ;)

LOL - Not a good person to ask because I am splurging on ALL my tile - kitchen backsplash as well as tile in the master and guest bath :-) Obviously it's all relative to what one can afford and I assume that $500 is not an amount that is keeping the wolf at the door - i.e. if you had unexpected expenses do you have money in the bank to pay or would you need to charge it? If the $500 is essentially discretionary income, definitely splurge because for the length of time you will be looking at it, it's pennies a day. If you are on a tight budget and $500 is a meaningful sum in terms of emergency savings and/or you would have to take the $500 from some other aspect of your remodel, then you need to decide what compromises you want to make and I would not spend it. I am trying to decide whether to spend an additional $2000 for the tile in the guest bathroom - I am leaning towards the more expensive one that I love - but mine would be 2" x 4". I am having my designer get me what she calls the "come to Jesus" moment when she presents me with a rough estimate of what else I need to buy LOL. I have the GC contract which so far doesn't have a lot of surprises but I am buying all the discretionary finish items as well as new furniture. Depending on whether I can be picked up off the floor when I see the total, I'll decide whether I can continue splurging LOL

Thanks both. mvcanada, we were thinking of buying a vanity/sink combo online so not necessarily able to buy extra material for backsplash and counter shelf, though if we go with a basic white it shouldn't be too hard to match, right? I can't decide if I would prefer a shelf that extends from the sink countertop, or one that is separate and between the sink and mirror. Might depend on which vanity we choose (still looking, as evidenced by my other post). But good point on running whatever we have to meet the large mirror. pamal66, can you clarify your last bit about the metal strip or pencil liner? Is that for the end of the backsplash on the edge of the sink so it doesn't feel like it just ends by accident? We did consider tiling the wall with the sink/toilet but we were feeling like the current half wall of tile was making the room feel smaller, and with the layout, we'd have to tile everything or just the tub (because tiling by the sink/toilet plus the tub but not the last wall where the vent is would just feel unfinished). We haven't decided on wall or floor colors yet, though the fixtures and tub tile will probably be a basic white. We love this floor: And these are some of our vanity inspirations: (this last one with a white top instead) One thought I had about the tile border was that if it doesn't match the tub tile, it could match whatever we put in the shower niche, but that's as far as I've gotten in finding an actual tile!
