So we're designing a big ol' deck....
Comments (20)Mmmm, nice visual with that oats analogy, John. ;-p I've got a layout now. I was working through all the load calculations by hand in figuring out where the piers needed to go, how thick the beams and joists needed to be, etc. when I saw an offer on decks.com. $100 gets you a deck design. That was hard to pass up, so I bit the bullet, and 24 hours later I've got them in hand (how cool is that?). It's bare bones, no 3D rendering or anything, but it did my engineering calcs for me, so I'm a happy camper. Here's my excel mock-up, showing some of the detail. Here's the framing plan and the pergola plan. The left portion is about 15x20 and pergola'd. The upper right portion is about 10x20 and pergola'd. (this is west-facing). The bottom right is just benched, with a fire pit planned. Decking is going perpendicular to the house so I can use full boards and avoid butt joints. Any input welcome, as to our layout and any issues you potentially see with construction....See MoreWe're Getting New Neighbor's!!
Comments (20)We have a good sized field between us and them. Plus we are back further off the road then they are. We have our garden in the field between us. . We plan on asking them if they would like sharing the garden space. We have plenty of space. We have lived here 45 years. The people that lived there before started with the grandparents, then the daughter's family and after both of them passing their 3 kids inherited it. One daughter bought out the other two. They lived there 4 year and lost it. So sad. All of them were great neighbors, too. We have always tried to be good neighbors. We are glad to see someone finally in there. We have had so many people there day and night. They have stripped the house....See MoreCondo Patio design: Should we add a raised deck? Layout help pls :)!
Comments (2)Updated plan work in progress. We added storage in the SE corner from the neighboring patio. We'll also put it lattice around the AC to disguise it. Still playing with layouts!...See MoreNeighbor’s Shed
Comments (45)It looks like your neighbor made a nice looking workshop/greenhouse. It does look big but I think it may eventually have issues with rain runoff because it is at the bottom end of a steeply inclined slope. He may wish he had put it in a higher location. I have out up 13 fast growing Emerald arborvitae on one side of my yard (wrapped in deer netting) that gives me total privacy on the right side of my yard. In the back I have planted 10 Green Giant arborvitae so I can't see the houses in back since our backyards abut even though we live on different streets/neighborhoods. In the bedrooms I have sheer curtains that still let in plenty of light but give us a break from our neighbors. Now if I could just do something my neighbors too tall tree that sheds thousands of tiny round seeds, hundreds of "propeller" seeds that end up in my dryer, freezer, hamper and make my deck unliveable for 2 to 3 weeks every June and way too many branches that cause sparks and little fires and even caused 3 local news channels to come to the street after a mini tornado. He keeps the tree well pruned too but refuses to take it down because arborists keep telling it's a healthy tree....See Morebostonoak
