Pendant light size 'rules' in relation to island.
Comments (11)We have some recessed lighting, are adding in lights in our lighted uppers, under cabinet lighting, over the sink lighting, all in addition to the pendants so I think we will be OK if they only light up the island. Since we are going with darker cabinets I was paranoid about it looking to dark so fingers crossed that I will have enough lighting! Question though, I have been looking mostly at nickel/chrome finishes figuring it would match the faucet, appliances, and cabinet hardware. Then I had a big "aha" moment when I walked into the kitchen and glanced at the ceiling fan in the attached eat in are with an oil rubbed bronze finish. We have the exact same ceiling fan in the family room, which is visible, but not completely open to the kitchen. I hadn't planned on replacing them. So...they have the same option in oil rubbed bronze (unfortunately for about $30 more), would that look ok with my finishes? or should I consider sticking with nickel/chrome and just changing out the ceiling fan instead? My cabinets are cherry stained med/dark, so the oil rubbed bronze would tie in with them, color wise. Boy, I am really tired of making decisions! Just when I think I am narrowing things down another pops up!...See MoreLighting advice needed for pendants over island
Comments (7)Love those pendants too, but I'm of the school that says odd numbers are more inherintly interesting, so I'd go with three. The nice thing with these being instantly height adjustable is that you could hang the center one a bit higher so they didn't seem crowded. The height adjustment would also make a single large one work-- it could go up for general light, down for more focused work. Do you need more light? Probably not, but it might still be nice to have. I really like undercab lighting, something to cut the shadow and make the counter sparkle a bit. I personally don't need super bright light there if there's good recessed lights overhead. It also makes a nice mood light when the others are turned off-- just a glow to enjoy the last of the wine, and reflect on the day. Or can be coupled with the pendant[s] without the overheads for a look that will focus attention on the island without being too stark......See Moreneed pendant lighting advice
Comments (7)I absolutely do not think so. many who will post after me will probably say that it isnt enough and that you should have 3 of that size. I have a 26x57 approx island and I have 2 drum shade pendants which are about 7 inches in diameter and they seem perfect to me, but I could have had at least up to 10 inches in D. Depending on what you put in there for wattage, you are just fine. I know there is a general rule about how much lighting per footage on islands, but I am not up on all that. If it looks balance, thats what I think is important. ps: you are talking the shade/globe part is 6 inches, right?...See MoreNeed to decide spacing of 2 pendant lights on part of island soon!
Comments (12)I would not do a pendant in this kitchen, you wont get the impact because you can only do one and it cannot be large or it would look out of place over the counter top. another factor is your ceiling height, which I assume to be 8ft, this means a large pendant really wont work as you will not get much cord drop. I know you are looking for pretty here, I get that, but this room will change a lot once the wall goes back in and the counter is placed. if i was you I would have them center an electrical box where you want the pendant on the idea that they can come back in and change it to a remodel pot if you decide against it....See Moremegs1030
