need pendant lighting advice

I have a 6 foot peninsula and I was planning on 2 pendant lights. I just got the lights I ordered and they are 6 inches wide. I thought they were 5 for some reason. I'm worried that they are too big for the space. Do you think 2 6-inch pendants will be too crowded?

Is the peninsula in? If so just put the lights on the peninsula in roughly the spot where they would hang and look at it.

If the peninsula is not there, cut out some cardboard and put it in the place it will go (if possible) and set the lights on top. Take a look and see if you like their size in relation to the peninsula.

I think that 6" is likely fine, but I would suggest comparing them to the intended size of the peninsula.

(also you would think that by the time I typed peninsula for the 5th time in this post I would spell it correctly, you'd be wrong, thanks spell check!)

Not at all. I am doing a 6 ft island and have 8 in. pendants (no pictures but will have next week) when they are installed. In fact, the lighting store suggested I do at least 7-10 in. with that large of an island..i think it will be perfect!!

Pendant lights for this situation are best going to be centered on the island and in the first / third quadrant farthest away from the stove. Centered because the eye will look at the island as the anchor and in the first / third so that they emphasize and encourage people to sit at the bar and engage with you. yes your math is good those fixture will not give good working light, too bright will be right in your eyes, to dull will not light the surface, be sure you have good placement on the recessed.

A walkthrough our new build revealed pendant lighting planned for the master bedroom of which I was unaware. The bed can only be a queen and can only go on one wall so placement for the electricians is easy. But before they start roughing in at the end of the week, can anyone advise of any negatives of pendants over traditional table lamps? Do they blow around in breezes? thanks

I absolutely do not think so. many who will post after me will probably say that it isnt enough and that you should have 3 of that size. I have a 26x57 approx island and I have 2 drum shade pendants which are about 7 inches in diameter and they seem perfect to me, but I could have had at least up to 10 inches in D. Depending on what you put in there for wattage, you are just fine. I know there is a general rule about how much lighting per footage on islands, but I am not up on all that. If it looks balance, thats what I think is important.
ps: you are talking the shade/globe part is 6 inches, right?

I think that is perfect. I have a 7.5 ft island and have 3 8" pendants. They should be between 18 to 24" apart.

whew! thanks. Ok, next question. How high do I hang them? This will be a workspace and I don't want them in my way..

You may want to try searching the forum for your answer. They have discussed this here before. What I remember is that it should be above your sight line, but they gave more specifics in some threads.

We have almost finished our kitchen and put the pendant lights over our 5'3" island a week ago. We have two 10"W
pendants and were so worried they would be too big. They look fantastic and we are so glad we went with them. When researching I read somewhere that they should be mid-forehead height of the tallest person in the home. Since my husband is 5'10" and we like to cook with friends, we opted to hang them a little higher and the bottom of the pendant is 5'11"
from the ground.
