Comments (58)Jennifer —-(Spraying with Neem Oil and or and other mixtures to eradicate the insects organically could still harm those beneficial insects. Some people will just let those pest stay on the tree because they dont want to harm them. Its a difficlt choice to make for some and you need to understand that some bad infestations that might get out of hand and could cause your trees to become weak and allow other diseses to slowly kill your tree. i always try and let Mother Nature work on the right balance of the pest verses the beneficial insets to keep everything in check. But sometimes i will have to step in and use more than organic to combact the problem. its up to you to decide what is best for your tree. Comments (4)I hope other more experienced growers can give some advice on what exactly to do with the plant, but there's one thing that you have to be aware of-sunburn. "so I placed the plant on my balcony 2 days ago to really give it some heavy direct sunlight throughout the day." If you just took the plant and plopped it out in direct sun with no prior acclimation I'm pretty sure a couple leaves will sunburn. If you want to put the plant outside then I would first leave it in an area that recieves ambient light from the sky with no direct sun. After a week passes, leave the plant out in brighter light for an hour, then the next day for two hours, etc. until the plant is left in direct sun for the entire day. "He said the plant could survive with no drainage... just water it once a week with 2 cups of water and provide it with lots of sunlight." Definitely untrue-I'm pretty certain that no plant can grow properly in a pot with no drainage. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure of this. Transferring the plant to a pot with drainage will definitely make both your life and the plant's life easier. Comments (10)what mike said ... just understand.. a light bulb is not the sun ... few million degrees of intensity different.... so you have to harden things off .. as noted above .... where are you???? ..... it should go outside.. in full bright shade ... and then planted in mother earth in the fall ... and winter over outdoors ... if its not zone appropriate for your location .... well.. we'll deal with that when you tell us that ... on some level.. you are loving it to death .. lets free it.. to be the tree it is ... its going to be very hard to grow it as a houseplant.. in the long run .... ken...See MoreMaidenhair fern(s): new fronds drying up/older leaf tips browning
Comments (21)I think this convo spurred me to try again, and I got an Adiantum aleuticum 'Imbricatum', and it apparently likes where I planted it (outside..not a house plant), and still has nearly perfect fronds (mild winter), we shall see. They are lovely...though the challenge for me may be the wetness of early to mid spring for it. The planting location is on the north side of the house, and it gets shaded by a growth of mimulus alatus (winged monkey flower) and it came through summer fantastically. I hope to see spore spread in a year or two, shield fern, lady fern, and painted ferns have performed well for me here and spread along the house foundation area....See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
