Need help with hallway ceiling lighting.

I would like to replace the ceiling lighting at the bottom of my staircase. It is old and doesn't go with anything. And it doesn't really throw any helpful light. At the top of the staircase, I have an alabaster ceiling light that I love. So it needs to be something that would compliment it rather than competing. The bottom light needs to provide light in the bottom well but I don't want it to be brighter than the lamp at the top. All ideas/solutions would be welcomed. See photo. Thanks!

Can't really see the space at the bottom, but maybe just a simpler version of the fixture you like?

The bottom chandelier lights up the immediate area inside the front door and the half-flight of stairs to the garage. I want the light at the top of the stairs to draw you upward, so I don't want this one to dominate. Yet, I do want it to be useful. Going up the stairs on the right are windows that overlook a center patio in our U-shaped house. So in the day time, there is lots of light.

Thank you everyone, looks like #1. is the favorite. :) Annie, it is 14" height by 10" wide. There were a couple other lights I liked but the lighting designer was concerned they were too tall with the 9' ceilings, she seemed more happy with this choice. Lol. I will take your advice and hang some bags to see the scale at the house tomorrow. That's a good idea. :) I wasn't to sure if choice #1 was too funky looking, like something that would remind people of some of the crazy lights people hung in the 70's, lol. But even when I showed hubby he seemed to like it. Usually we picked lighting more modern and in chrome or brushed steel so this is a big change. My one son asked me why the new lighting is so gothic, lol.

My suggestion would be to suspend your pendants centered on the upper glass window approx 24" or so down from ceiling. Sometimes, with a pitched ceiling, the light will suspend slightly to the downside of the j box even though the box is centered in the space. I would go for a round shaped pendant under 12" diameter each. My preference would be to illuminate wall and ceiling as well as down. Keep it simple because there will be a lot of them in a line. Will there be artwork on the walls or anything that might want a more focused light?

Since they're hallway lights, rather than invest a lot of money in them, you might consider focusing instead on making the all the hall lights visually disappear when not on -- just have all the hall lights match and let the room lights you've already chosen take all the glory.

If you prefer the look of recessed "can" lights, there are some great retrofit options these days. These install like regular surface-mount fixtures, but they are ultra-slim and look very similar to a can light. And they are quite reasonably priced too. Of course, if you want more than one fixture in a location that previously only had a single fixture, or if you want dimmers in a location that didn't have them, then things get a little more expensive. But this is well within the realm of what a DIY homeowner or a cheap handyman could do. This doesn't mean that "real" can lights don't make sense in new construction products. But for retrofits, the difference in labor cost favors the ultra-slim lights.

please dont post pic collages they are so hard to look at. just post a picture from about three steps down on the stair case looking at the one you want to replace. BTW the fixture you want rid of is vintage and could bring a few $$.

depending on your budget Justice Design Group makes a very nice high quality faux alabaster that would pair well.
