Ceiling fans in kitchen-doable or dated?
Comments (24)Save money elsewhere and buy the fanimation fan if it will work (with the pot rack) or go with their air shadow (I think that's what they're called) which have blades that fold up when not in use. I have an air shadow in our library. We still have to paint the blades dark, but here's a pic. We love this fan...and obviously we're not the only one...air shadows come with an on and off (high med and low) and a demo option LOL and we use that demo all the time...people love to turn it on and off and see it fold in and out :) Ours does not have a light, but if you want the option of it looking like a light most times, they have nice globes that can be added that don't resemble 80's fan hell :) Don't go with brushed nickle :oP It pains me to hear that color mentioned....go classic silver chrome or black...it's so much more fun :oP...See MoreReplacing kitchen light in ceiling and installing ceiling fans?
Comments (1)Have an electrician take down the old light and take a look at the connection. You might need a stronger box, or not. That is a simple fix. Our small LR fan came with the DW but we did have a larger fan/lights installed last year. I think he may have replaced the box. As an aside, Don't put a fan anywhere near the kitchen stove if it is gas. Could blow the flame out, even on low fan setting. I couldn't use my fan in our last house when I needed it most - hot humid days :-(....See Moreceiling fan for kitchen and lights attached to or in ceiling beam
Comments (6)I have a fan in my kitchen and while I find it a distinct relief in hot weather, I can't have it on while canning or any cooking that requires consistent, steady temperature control, as the fan tends to blow the flame around. That's fine - I turn the fan down or off for a while. It hasn't killed me yet, so it isn't that big a deal. My house is a Craftsman and I looked high and low for an appropriate-style ceiling fan that wasn't scary-expensive. Apparently I was hunting Unicorns. I settled for a basic simple fan style that at least doesn't look all wrong, even if it wasn't what I'd envisioned. It was cheap, and can be easily upgraded down the road. Not much help, I know - I have box beams all over my main floor (although not in the kitchen) but the light fixtures are not in the beams. Comments (1)I would forego the fan in the kitchen. There's no need for it. Because your sink is right in front of the island, I would go for a pendant only over one of them. It can look too busy to have them over both, especially when they overlap in the sight line. Over the island would be my vote. Recessed light everywhere would be your best bet but don't know your wants or budget. I would consult with a lighting professional, as lighting plans are actually more complicated than people think....See MoreJ Inhof
