Help! Is this Rug Too Big?

Our house has a large living room right when you walk in the front door. We have purchased a couch and two reading chairs, and wanted to create two spaces, however we (stupidly) did not measure and ordered a 9x12 rug. It costs $165 to return/replace, so wanting to see if this is still usable?

We will be getting rid of the sectional chairs-

Thought would be to put couch a bit out from back wall and then two chairs somewhere..obvi we can no longer have a walkway/separation between the two spaces.

Any advice welcome!!!

As long as one side of the rug is longer than your sofa you are good to go. It should slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa and leggy chairs should sit entirely on it.

I don’t like a rug over carpeting, especially when the front door opens into the living room. It never lays flat and has the look of a lost soul.

Use it in your dining room.

Are the chairs in photo what you are calling reading chairs? Where are the wall plugs for tables and lamps?

Measurements of the room, please. Is the front door in the middle of the outside wall?

I do not think your rug is big. I just see your chairs are too close to each other.

Squirrel - I haven't given up on rattan or wicker-- I just won't start with a piece. The dining room has woven bamboo and rattan chairs-- so it would tie the two rooms together. I have been threatening to get the malabar chair from PB until I get chairs -- but that's a pretty big chair and would take the place of one of the other chairs. I do like it though. PC - yes, to antique a mirror properly, you have to oxidize the back. There are techniques you can do to the front though. I am not convinced that's the best look for the room.. but it is in my back pocket. I can definitely paint the lower half of the wall (it isn't clear in the photos but the staircase wall has a ledge part way up and then a wall that goes to the roof. I have height issues-- I couldn't do it myself. Greenthumb hahah.. well I don't know if its the rug or the mirror but SOMETHING is making my butt look big. I hadn't heard of mirror mate before you mentioned it here. I looked it up and wow, so cool. I like the idea but it's going to cost me a lot. I was thinking of getting some barnwood to make the frame-- but mirror mate is sure simple! Thanks for the idea.. I am going to mull it over. I go back to work next week (after a month off) so time is going to soon be more valuable than money so it may still be my best option. Thanks so much -- you have each given me such great ideas and encouragement. So what do you think? Keep the leather chair or return it? I do rather like it on the fireplace wall but I love the other chairs too. I am torn. (My 6 yo nephew told me I "better not" return the leather chair. He looooooves it ha)

Living room too big for one seating area but too small for two. Help!

My living room is 17 1/2 x 15 1/2 I don't find it too large for a single seating area. I guess it depends on how you lay out the furniture. Where your TV is we have a fireplace with book shelves. The TV is in the book shelves with 2 chairs flanking the fireplace. I have my couch where you have your love seat and my love seat where you have you couch. Maybe switch your love seat and couch. This would push back the room and fill up the empty space.

It's absolutely not bad. I just think it could be better. If you love it, that's all that matters. It appears to be shades of bluish gray. Will you have such colors elsewhere in the room? It should tie in to other elements. By the way, I think you will really like Accessible Beige. We have it throughout our house and have been very pleased with the color.

Seeing as it's a child's room, keeping the larger rug would help keep sound down. I vote leave it in 1) it's already there 2) when it begins to wear or have baby/child stains, THEN maybe go down to a smaller size Unless you have the Queen of England coming to visit, it's YOUR house. (I guess even then, it's still your house =] )

I agree that ideally I wouldn't put a rug over carpeting but the room definitely needed some bright pops of color and I loved this rug! :)

The living room extends into a den where we have the TV and another couch-so this is more of the formal room...

Beautiful rug, good choice and use it by moving all the furniture closer and on the rug.

All of your furniture is neutral as is your walls with no art or accessories. I like the rug but it looks awkward in your space and will be a tripping hazard to people coming through the door. Sorry to say there will be other ways of bringing color into your room, but this isn't it.

Yes, the rug is a bit large but it will work. Share a simple floorplan sketch with room measurements for best advice. Are you considering a wood or tile floor in the future.? If yes, start a floor fund with the money you "save" by not returning the rug you love.

Also,what is the room on the other side of the fireplace? And is that the front door in the third pic?

The room on the other side is part of the dining room (with a reddish tile) on the left, and then part of the kitchen which has hardwood flooring.

Yes, that's the front door. It's definitely a unique set up, as you walk right into the living room from the door, there is no foyer or entrance, which is what makes it a bit more challenging.

UPDATE: furniture is here and I love how it turned out! :)

Very happy with how this all turned out and can't wait to add in wall art, and a plant in the upper right corner by the closet. :)
