Newer red HTs: Firefighter, Lasting Love, Velvet Fragrance, etc.
Comments (18)well, I will speak up as a fan of Lasting Love (which was sold as Commandant Cousteau until about 2009), but with the caveat that I'm in zone 10, so cold zoners should take that with a big grain of salt. It's my go-to recommendation for the folk who always ask me for a "fragrant, classically formed, did I say fragrant?, red hybrid tea" and, unlike Velvet Fragrance, it is usually available (even now) in well-stocked nurseries. And yes, it is very fragrant, and I use it to win fragrance classes in shows quite often. I love the foliage, which seems to be disease free here in mildew heaven, and you can easily see why -- the leaves are very shiny and thick. I have grown Velvet Fragrance, but only as an own root plant, and it committed suicide in that configuration before it really got established. If I saw Velvet Fragrance somewhere as a grafted plant, I would try it again, but not own root. As for the OP's original question about whether these newer red hybrid teas are really better than Mirandy, Papa Meilland, etc., I would say yes, even though I still grow most of these older ones. On the older plant varieties, the bloom and especially its fragrance, is often superior, but all of them seem to grow poorly, and lankily for me. But I keep them around because I like the blooms when they deign to produce one or two. Papa Meilland is an especially poor grower, with an especially fantastic one or two occasional blooms. Sitting here sniffing a Papa M. right now. Here, have a whiff:...See MoreHow much do your stores charge for newer roses?
Comments (19)all the varied rose prices are making me nuts. I see one deal then another and never know where to stop! Well back in the bare root season I bought 2 expensive roses in peat pots. They were about $22 each. Black Baccart & PJP II. I got those planted nice and early and they are two of my nicest roses. That same darn nursery keeps knocking down the prices on those peat pots. First to $9.99 so I got Candyland climber, rock N' roll, and mardi gras. the candyland is going gangbusters and the other 2 are starting to fill out. Now they dropped the prices on those peat pots to $5 with some giant plants in them. I picked up an iceberg this week. And I'm not sure if I can resist the Dreamweaver climber they had. Of course I have also picked up cheap $6 container roses at Lowe's (which grow really well!) and a bunch of body bags I bought at HD (not that great really...). boy you can spend almost anything on these roses. Of course our local nursery has rows & rows of gorgeous giant container roses. My favorite "break" is to take a cup of coffee and wander through their roses. I haven't been brave enough to buy one but I find a new favorite there all the time. Diana Princess of Whales was sooo tempting today. ok way too long of an answer! gbebeh (with wayy too much shopping in San Diego)...See MoreMauve, lavender, purple, etc
Comments (31)Beth, Please see the difference between your Blue Boy picture on help me find and the other pictures of blue boy on Help me find: Your Blue boy (many petals): Other Blue Boy (less petals and different flower): They are two different roses though the names are the same. I know because I bought a Blue boy bush this year and on its label it was written that it is developed by Interplant, year 2000. on the label it was also written repeat blooming. I bought it because i liked the flowers on the photo of the label and because it repeated. When I went home and researched the rose, I was shocked that on Help me Find it was written that Blue Boy does not repeat. I called the shop and they explained to me that my rose is a different rose that repeats. Anyway, I will understand what I got when I see how it blooms this year....See More"Royal Lavender" rose
Comments (11)Hi Bart! I'm sorry, I've been "otherwise occupied" battling downy mildew. Royal Lavender is NOT a silvery-lavender. It IS sometimes pinkish-mauve, sometimes rather brownish-lavender. It is quite fragrant and there honestly isn't anything else quite like it. It was one of the first "mauvish" climbers and is pretty much a museum piece these days, as are many of the other strangly colored early roses. If water, space and disease pressures weren't issues here, I would grow it again. I wouldn't use it for breeding, which is pretty much what I limit my space use for these days, but I did enjoy the rose. In the mid California desert, it was healthy, but I know it wouldn't be here along the Central California Coast where nights are chilly and wet, followed by warmish, sunny and very windy days. If you just have to try it, go for it. But, if you really want something along the coloring of Blue Moon, Sterling Silver and their like, it won't please you....See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
