How much do your stores charge for newer roses?

I'm curious about pricing of roses around the country. I know I've gotten big nice newer roses for $7 or so when traveling through Gulf states, but maybe those were end of season sales? Up here in Kansas, the nurseries charge anywhere from $16 to $26 for 3 gallon size, and box stores usually go from $7 to $15 for 2 gallon or larger. Of course the box stores have mainly older roses, but last year I saw a few new J&Ps at Walmart. Also, last year I saw (and bought) a lot of knock outs for $5 for the 1 gallon size, but this year the price is way up.

I think box stores bag roses must be pre-priced, so I would like to know the regional variance in potted plants.

Anyone care to share local prices? I read the post about OLOG at Publix for 5.50 in Florida when I can't find it here for any price. Most years I can find good deals later in the season for bare roots on mail order, but what I'm asking for here is comparisons of store prices.

Where I work we sell all types of knockout roses for 7.99 for a gallon. The three gallon are $19.99 for all roses (we don't have other varieties in a gallon).

That's pretty much as low as we can go on them.

I think I usually pay about $20 for a potted rose locally. I did find a nursery selling the Ashdown roses in Illinios last year and they were about $30 or more which I thought was too much to pay (especially as they didn't look very well cared for). I've found some great deals in the fall - usually half price but it's iffy buying roses that late as they won't do anything the first year and might not make it through the winter.

The body bag roses are where the really good deals are, but you get what you pay for. Last year I got Paradise for $2 and it could have been free if I had bothered with the rebate. It was very small though, and I'm not sure it made it through the winter.

Why, oh, why would I want to keep track of my expenses? What if my husband saw it!?! I have been assuring him for years that I get the majority "free" on some sort of loyalty incentive program. He is not stupid, but the lie comforts us both and provides marital harmony. Actually, good luck with keeping track of your expeditures. I obviously don't, but gardening is my one splurge. I am willing to wear old clothes, continue driving my swamp car, and dye my own hair (although if any of you actually know me--this is totally my natural hair color as I am certainly not going gray!). I put costs in equivalent number of roses to decide what gets fixed: 3 months of hair dye--one rose, fixing swamp car's blinkers--10 roses; buying new car--way, WAY too many roses. So far, I get hair dye, but keep swamp car without useable blinkers.

Here is the directions for my shelving units, might sound difficult but it is really simple but take time. Here is a not so quick idea of how my paint storage shelves were made. All wood is ¼" wood stock, we used some old paneling & other scraps, but any wood would work. Measurement need to figure the sizes you needed. Back height: mine is 23" wide by 22" high and it holds 135 bottles. To find height: The distance between the bottom of the first shelf and the top of the next shelf is 2 ½" and each shelf is the same ending with the bottom shelf ¼" up from the bottom of the back, 2 ½" times the number of shelves you need plus ¼ equals the back height. Back width: Each bottle fit into a 1" "U" shape with ½" spacer area between where one "U" ends and the next begins. Beginning at one side measure and place a mark at ½" From that mark measure & mark in 1," then ½" then at 1" and continue ending with ½" My row of 15 bottles = 15"+ 8" (16 spacers @1/2" each) equals 23" per shelf. Ex: 20 bottles = 20" + 21 spacers@ ½" each for 10 ½," or 20" + 10 1/2"= 30 ½." Cuts: Back and 2 sides, using your measurements. Shelf bracing: cut strips ¼ x ¼ wide x width of the back. ex. mine is 23" wide so we cut ¼" X 23" cut as many as the number of shelves you are using. Shelves: Cut ¼" X 4" deep X width. Neck holders: ¼" x 1 ½" x desired width. Using the entire length, find and mark the center (3/4) at both ends and several more time if necessary. Draw a line from one end to the other. Using this center line and beginning at either end place a mark at ½," from this mark measure in 1" and mark, continue the ½" then 1" then ½" across the board ending with ½" Find the center of each 1" area, and using a 1" hole saw, cut out a circle. Repeat to the end. When done cut the board down the middle, you now have two scalloped boards. Repeat as needed. DH cheated here and taped two boards together and cut two at a time. He then used one as a template for the rest, cutting two at a time. Glue one straight edge of the neck piece to each shelf edge. We used contact cement, but any good wood glue would work but watch for movement of the pieces. Let dry. Back & bracing pieces piece: measure down from the top of the back and place a line at 2 ½" on both right and left sides. From this mark go down 2 ½," repeat the 2 ½" to the bottom, be sure to leave ¼" at the bottom. This is a good time to check to see if this is the correct size and make any adjustments as needed. Extend these marks to the inside and outside of both side pieces. Glue a shelf brace below all the marks you have made on the back of the unit. Let dry. Assembly: We placed the back piece on a scrap piece of plywood just bigger than the back. Glue and nail the sides to the back. To help keep the shape correct we taped a shelf inside the top and the bottom side pieces. Once the sides were in place we placed a long strip of wood along the outside of the side and secured them to the plywood, thus keeping the side tight to the back. Let dry. Starting at the bottom, add glue to the back and sides of each shelf and place them inside the frame and on top of the braces. Then add finishing nails along the line on the outside of each side piece. Repeat until you finish at the top of the unit. Again let dry. We then attached the unit to the wall and were luck enough to have two studs right where we need them, but you might have to use molly screw if you cant find stud. We used 9 screws in all. The unit is very solid and survived all of the abuse it received during the flood, being shoved from here to there before again claiming space in my craft/panty. Fascinating topic :). I have never been interested in make up, and so never got into much of it. Daily routine is, after washing face, to apply an SPF 30 moisturizer, brow pencil since I plucked most of mine as a teenager and they never grew back, and a dot of Dermablend cover on a small but very pale and noticeable circular scar above one eye where I had a skin cancer removed. Quit bothering with eye shadow and blush years ago, ditto with foundation which is also nasty to wear in the Miami subtropical weather; feels to me like wearing a greasy mask, yuck. Actually the climate here strongly mitigates against the multilayer face 'painting' I read about; cannot imagine plastering on primer/foundation/powder and then leaving it to bake all day especially during what I call our double 90 season (heat and humidity). Have never used lipstick, rarely mascara and never tried eye liner. Have never had an interest in Botox or any other type of intervention or surgical options and probably never will. I did Invisalign orthodontia several years ago; had lived with crooked teeth until I was 50+ YO and the feeling about my improved appearance/smile, along with the greater ease in keeping up with dental hygiene due to straight teeth has been immeasurably positive. I have my hair professionally cut and highlighted every 10-12 weeks. Wash and blow dry it every other day, use a straightening iron too often--as I'm aging my hair is developing that brittle overprocessed look that I hate to see. I need to up my use of hair treatments but just haven't bothered. What else--do my own pedicures, no manicures or nail polish on my hands. Did fingernail polish for years on my own but didn't like how it discolored the nails and prefer natural. I am in major stall on exercise; was doing Pilates regularly with a trainer but she closed her studio and I haven't found a group class with a good instructor on a schedule that works for me. At 58, I badly need to get myself into a regular schedule of cardio, stretching and weight training. Have never had to worry about weight but the tone and fitness lack is worrisome. I'd call myself diligent in keeping clean, tidy and looking reasonable but in many ways I like being in the stage of life at which I've become 'invisible'. It's very freeing in a lot of ways not to worry about trying to live up to whatever i social acceptability standard for appearance is out there for women these days :).

Dragonfly....it's nothing like some of the free hand mosiacs YOU do....lovely I might add.....but this is what my friends wanted. And how much grout to leave when hitting the corner edge was a judgement call. :0)

I paid $15 for my 2 gallon Jackson Perkins roses at a nursery in SoCal. Lowes wanted 19.95 for the same roses. I also picked up some nice 1 gallon roses at Walmart for $6.49. Nurseries will run occasional sales so keep an eye out. My better roses are from the nursery and they are currently holding 8 roses until late April. Sometimes I pay more for better quality and service at nurseries.
My nursery held roses are 2 Black Baccara, 2 John Paul II, Elle, Granada,Olympiad, and Veteran's Honor.

I'm slowly learning that success depends mostly upon when I plant the roses. I can grow body bag roses if I plant them real early in the spring, and bare root ones from mail order if I get them in by June, and potted if I get them in by July. Plants I buy in August or later only have a 50-50 chance of making it through the winter. After several years of buying $5 roses in fall and losing 3 out of 4, I've come to realize I should pick the nicest ones in the spring (for up to $20) and have something that will stay healthy, saving me time and money. The body bags I bought in the past month had decent roots, and I paid $2 apiece in a lucky clearance sale. We'll see if they are true to name and virus free...
I paid $16 yesterday for Dream Come True and a few other new ones then passed up April in Paris and I'm already kicking myself, but I had to stop somewhere.

I forgot to say that when I look for roses I compare size and health rather than price. I'll pay more for a nice, big, healthy rose and not think twice about it. That's why sales are nice, but I won't wait for one if I see a good sized rose that I want.

In the town where I live there is only one real nursery. For years I have been so focused on perennials, shrubs and trees I walked right by the rose section and never noticed what roses they had. Until the last year and a half or so when I have become more smitten with roses. A friend bought me 'Angel Face' at our nursery and I bought myself 'What a Peach' for $11.00 last summer. My next closest preferred choice is a nursery about two hours away that I finally noticed had roses last year. About a month ago I went up there and bought 'Julia Child' and 'Pope John Paul II' for $22.50 each. They were so healthy and nice looking I was comfortable with the price and very happy to have them. It wasn't hard to tell they were in an environment where they were cared for. Furthermore I phoned that nursery the day before and they were able to tell me with the minimum of searching what roses they did or did not have on hand. I'm happy to pay a little more at a private nursery with good customer service.

Body bags go for between $3.99 to $5.99 at the box stores.
Two packs of #1 J&P's go for $19.99 at Costco.
Two gallon potted Roses in peat pots at the nursery go for $17.95 to $19.95.
My local nursery claims to have 800 varities and they may be telling the truth as they have lots and those are the ones I buy locally.

Our local nurseies sell potted roses 24.95 up to 27.95 and they don't usually have any of the newer roses.A friend took me out of town to a nursery and their roses was 12.95 in the 3 gal.pots and ones in smaller pots was 8.95.Very nice roses,too..

Most of local nurseries in Northern California, except Reagan's, don't sell bare roots at all. They pot the bare roots in disposable 7 gallons paper pots. Then they turn around and sell them for $39.99 for the rest of the year. Regan's pots their roses after the bare root season is over and then sells them for $29.99.

They are all newer roses from JP, Star and DA. However, I find it to be way too expensive since you can buy the same bare root they pot for about 1/2 the price. Just my 2c worth.

Around where I live, I'd say the average Spring nursery price is for potted roses at around 22-25$, these are usually Weeks or J&P. The most I ever paid was a VA nursery - $30 for a Sunset Celebration, which I desperately wanted and no-one had.
If you buy golden oldies like Mirandy or Peace at Home Depot, you can sometimes get very good potted bushes for 8-16$, my Mirandy and Memorial Day are these. Walmart's Prices are very good, but I see roses that I have never heard of, or are non-patented? Not that these are bad, and my beautiful floribunda Grand Prize came as a peat pot from Walmart.

Finally there are the cheap (named varieties) and cheaper (really old or mystery rose) body bags, but hey, my new body bag Queen Elizabeth is taking off gangbusters - of course, this one is said to grow anywhere!

If I have to pay full price for Heaven on Earth this year, I will bite. Finally, sometimes you can get good own-root roses (English, Easy Elegence) at Home Depot for ~10$, but, our Home Depot and Lowes are awful to their plants, best to get there as soon as they are off the truck.

Well, a week ago I went to this cream of the crop garden center because they are supposed to be a test garden site etc. I was hoping to check out the new Candy Land climber as I was considering it. It's new this year, they had it potted up and almost ready to open their blooms. They were $35 for a 2+ gal. pot. To be fair the rest of their climbers were the same price, all beautiful but I decided to go with Berries 'n' Creme in a peat pot, same aged plant 2-3 ft tall with blooms and that was $20 (even better). For me it was tried/true and gave me the same striped effect with a track record. I did buy a just as fabulous looking, Polka, for $35 but it was worth it from all I read and it was gorgeous & healthy with lots of buds that should open starting tomorrow or the next day I hope. This center is in a very affluent area so I guess their residents wouldn't bat an eye for the price but they looked so nice that an extra $5 over 2 other nurseries was way worth it even tho I had to drive.

all the varied rose prices are making me nuts. I see one deal then another and never know where to stop!

Well back in the bare root season I bought 2 expensive roses in peat pots. They were about $22 each. Black Baccart & PJP II. I got those planted nice and early and they are two of my nicest roses.

That same darn nursery keeps knocking down the prices on those peat pots. First to $9.99 so I got Candyland climber, rock N' roll, and mardi gras. the candyland is going gangbusters and the other 2 are starting to fill out.

Now they dropped the prices on those peat pots to $5 with some giant plants in them. I picked up an iceberg this week. And I'm not sure if I can resist the Dreamweaver climber they had.

Of course I have also picked up cheap $6 container roses at Lowe's (which grow really well!) and a bunch of body bags I bought at HD (not that great really...).

boy you can spend almost anything on these roses.

Of course our local nursery has rows & rows of gorgeous giant container roses. My favorite "break" is to take a cup of coffee and wander through their roses. I haven't been brave enough to buy one but I find a new favorite there all the time. Diana Princess of Whales was sooo tempting today.

Gbehbeh - Where did you find the Candy Land Cl. for cheap? I'm in So. Org county. I wouldn't mind trying one for a lot less than the $35 I saw. Hmmmm.... Let me know,,I may take a ride. Not that I need to plant any more roses if you ask my husband.

Where I live a large grade 1 potted rose from a good nursery goes for $40. For places like Home Depot approximately $25. Significantly less during end of season sales and of course for body bags.

BTW, I don't buy grafted roses from corporate sources anymore. All of my new roses come as own root bands from small privately owned nurseries. Most of these run for about $10 to $15 plus shipping.

Thanks for all the feedback. Guess I'll have to move to San Diego! It may be a tradeoff, though. Doubt I could afford any acreage there, so I would be complaining about having all those roses but no place to plant them.
Patrick, I took a look at the own root bands I ordered last year, and they are just as big as the full size roses I bought. That may be the best way to go--if I can't luck into a sale somewhere. I was just hoping someone would name a city I could travel to because sometimes the regional differences are pretty shocking. Another post mentioned that Chamblees has better walk-in prices than mail order, so I might just plan a road trip that direction!

I just paid for one rose:

Shipping = $20.62

Total = $45.62 for one rose!!
I won't be doing that again.
