New lake house needs window treatments - please help!
Hi All!
I just moved into my dream house - little house on a little lake - and am slowly getting settled in. Now it is time for some window treatments! The main room has 7 (!) windows: one above the kitchen sink, two beside the dining table, and four in the sitting area. One of the sitting area ones is quite close to the freestanding wood stove, so long draperies are out of the question for that spot at least, just for safety reasons.
Goals for treatments are to enhance the windows themselves and provide a little more privacy and some glare protection. No one lives directly across the lake, but sometimes people kayak past close to the shore. The kitchen window looks out at a neighbor’s house.
I’d love to hear ideas for what might look good for these distinct but connected areas. I feel like they should coordinate, but do they all need to be the same? In general, I prefer simple styles and lean toward a craftsman / cottage / eclectic vibe - nothing mid century or modern. Any ideas are welcome, and thank you!

Comments (21)Thanks so much for all the comments, suggestions and photos. I agree with most that I could use some color/fabric in here. I decided abruptly the other day to just go order those 2" fabric blinds from Lowes. There's something about them I like, and the price was so low, (compared to a roman shade, esp. one from Smith & Noble) I figure they will be OK for a while and will solve the immediate problem of the glaring sun. If I don't love them (likely), Ill start saving up for a custom fabric shade which I do think Id like the most. I'm just in that too tired to think anymore spot & wanted to get something up. Also I didn't expect this but the woman at Lowes told me I can even return them if I hate them so theres no risk! I didn't think you could return a custom size blind...that's a perk of shopping the big box stores I guess. The pictures were very helpful as I realized maybe I could try a runner or 2 on the floors in the kitchen to add some color? I notice a lot of the kitchens posted above have nice runners. Mommyto4boys - Thanks so much for the compliments, seriously it makes me feel so good. Especially in regard to my dining room/fireplace. I had originally wanted to do built-ins flanking the fireplace (went back and forth on if I'd do white or dark stain). Our budget ran out though, and so I'm living with the 2 pieces of furniture we already had. The china cabinet on the left is black, the other cabinet is a liquor/bar cabinet from Ikea and its a dark brown. The fireplace was red brick with a oak mantle shelf, brass screen and dark gray slate hearth. I whitewashed the brick, changed the screen and painted the mantle White dove. Comments (8)By cafe curtains, do you mean the tiered set? I'm just not sure what that means? I always think of kitchen curtains! How would I mount a curtain rod from the ceiling? I once had regular curtain rods before I put in the seat, but with the roller shades, there is no place to put the rod hooks. Comments (15)@apple_pie_order The all white kitchens in my idea books also have wood floors which help to warm things up. Unfortunately, I was unable to talk hubby into wood floors for the kitchen so I had to go with tile which brings even more white into the mix. The furnishings are mine but the upholstered items will be recovered in a different fabric. I am not sure what to do with the furniture at this point since the furniture wood colors are so warm. Comments (12)Floating the bed is a nice idea but you wouldn't have room for any type of night stands. An armoire is a wonderful idea for extra storage. Just simple white sheers on the window since you don't seem to need privacy. The floors are beautiful and it's a lovely room. Look at folding wood plantation shutters like this, they become part of the room milkwork, when open they don‘t conceal the window details.

4 years agoI'd find a pattern that coordinates with your chair and ottoman, then do some simple drapery panels between all the windows. I might even finish with a light-colored woven wood shade which will diffuse the light but not block it entirely. Leave the kitchen window alone. Here are some examples for style, not color/pattern:

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoA tiny home on the lake with great views needs minimalistic window shades that are functional and beautiful - no compromise. You opted for very nice double hung windows with beautiful trim...so your best option are inside mount installed shades. Bottom up top down shades that have no string across your glass or cords to operate. Available in hundreds of colors...
For your double hung window next to each other you need to opt for two individual shades...do not cover up the post - keep the design and style of each unit.
