Would love your input on Thomas Affleck

I've searched the site for this rose and almost everyone who has it gives it good reviews, but the posts are all older. I wonder if someone is growing this rose now, and what your opinion is. I'm especially interested in anyone who grows TA in a climate similar to mine, hot and dry in the summer, with mild and (hopefully) rainy winters. Pictures would be especially welcome, of course. Thank you.

I know longer have our Thomas Affleck...Groundhog got to the roots and I never replaced the rose bush...

Anyhow I really liked Thomas Affleck but just never replaced it...Thrips liked that rose here..lol

Our climate is much different than yours though..

I think TA was bred for TEXAS climate...

I knew you had this rose, Jim, but I wasn't aware of what had happened to it. You had such a great post showing the progress of TA from one year to the next. It looked so beautiful and then - kaboom. That was so sad. I'm a little worried since one person in your post said it gets mildew in CA; guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Ok I don't know where to start...lol... But anyhow I made an unwise choice when I moved Thomas affleck this past April. The location floods easy from a situation that is out of my control but is suppose to be fixed in the future by our local railroad company. The location only gets 5-6 hours of sunlight and Thomas Affleck seems to do better here with more sunlight than that...I was going to wait until next Spring and move him to a better location but after thinking about it and the fact I was bored today I moved Thomas Affleck to his NEW location today instead of waiting... All in all Thomas Affleck has done well this year...He has grown well! No disease! Only drawback is he did not bloom well and when he did bloom the blooms only lasted 24-48 hours on the bush... Note: I want to note that Thomas Affleck does have some thorns and they are like needles so gloves still need to be worn... Thomas in his new location... I promise he will NOT be moved again....lol Thomas does have some thorns.... I will give more updates on Thomas next year... Poor rose bush...lol

I'm not in the east, but grow 'thomas affleck' here in Dallas and I gave one to my mom in KC, Mo. It is disease resistant and great in both places.

You know what I really hate. This was a great saga for a rose and it wasn't supposed to end this way. I have followed this from the beginning as have others. Its like a movie that you have been watching then suddenly the character that you like the most dies or it ends without an ending.

Our own rootThomas Affleck was planted in May of 2014 but I moved it twice in 2015 so still young yet... Location gets 8-12+ hours of sun depending on position of the sun...We live in a high BS pressure area and I do not spray... TA is cane hardy here...Not much winterkill at all so far... Ingrid- TA has been

growing in my Dallas garden since 2003 and has been carefree. He‘s heat tolerant, disease resistant and reblooming (when I cut the large hips off.). My mom grows him in KC, Missouri z6 w/ good results- has been cold hardy there too.

I have Thomas here and love him. Ordered another one this year, it’s one of the few I have multiples of. My weather is much different than yours though.

sabalmatt and Dingo, thanks so much for your input. It seems to be a good rose in very variable locations, and I'm especially glad to know TA is heat-tolerant.

The color was one of the reasons I wanted it. So many of my roses are pale and I wanted some contrast. I don't think it's garishly bright, or at least I hope not.

TA is a healthy and good repeat rose in my garden. It seems like I got a full round of blooms every month. Fragrance is very light to my noise. I tried to post a picture but couldn’t.

Jennifer, thank you so much! It is a bright rose but it looks just right in your charming setting. I like the informal nature of the bush and the blooms, and the fact that it blooms a lot for you.

Mine has actually done well for years with much neglect. I suppose it’s been “too easy” to be my favorite, but he is great, heat and drought tolerant, never requires much attention. I’m in south Texas zone 9a.

Lesli, thank you; it sounds like the perfect rose for my conditions. It won't arrive until fall but I'll report on how it does as soon as it's settled in a bit.
