Wednesday's Mystery Flower
Comments (8)Yes, Heather has it, Sedum spectabile. I wouldn't mind betting she has it blooming now in her own garden! Here's my plant My pics are nowhere near as sharp or well composed as, say Barbara's or Sheila's (from Perth), but for those interested they were taken with my Canon 300D with the standard, very cheap 18-55 mm lens, which in my opinion can give great results. I always use 400 ISO because I can detect no reduction in quality from 200 or 100. For flower closeups I often use the built-in flash, with Manual setting at 1/200 and f36, at longest focal length, giving maximum depth of field (actually shortest focal length of 18 mm may give more, but perspective is distorted and focussing less precise). I used the flash technique for this photo. I discovered afterwards I had left the resolution setting on only 3Mb and higher JPEG compression instead of my usual 6 Mb and least compression. In Photoshop Elements I cropped this original picture ... and tweaked contrast and saturation slightly (I always take originals with the standardised Adobe Colour Space which gives a very muted picture). I then resaved with a further JPEG compression of Medium (5 on scale of 1-12). The cropped size was about 700 pixels wide, ideal for posting here, so I did not need to resize it, though I did resize the uncropped version shown here to 700 wide....See MoreWednesday's Mystery Flower(s)
Comments (17)I have never heard of a common name for Colquhounia. I suppose "Himalayan Mint Shrub" is as good as any, though really it tells you nothing more than it's a shrub, it's in the mint family, and it comes from the Himalayas. Boring! If Dee or plantsplus don't manage to post a mystery flower in the next few days, I suggest someone else should have a go. It's an activity that seems to revive interest in this forum. I remember 2-3 years ago we had the same sort of thing quite regularly....See MoreWednesday flowers
Comments (6)Mantis, I got this in a trade with Gail Benoit in a daylily trade group I used to belong to. She lives in VA. I suspect she got it from the hybridizer as she has all kinds of unique daylilies, including Australian ones....See MoreWednesday Flowers
Comments (15)Goes to show you about different regions. In my part of the country June Bugs are brown beetles. The Green beetles we have are otherwise known as Fig beetles, but they are much larger then a June Bug. I think what you have may be an Iridescent Beetle which is common up in the more northern states. But I'm no expert and Green June Bug is a good name for them too. I'll post a link on the Iridescent Beetle below........Taking off my nerd glasses now in order to tell you how beautiful your daylilies are. I always like looking at Cat Dancer. It's rounded form and pattern are so appealing...Cosmic Struggle, with it's velvet coat on, is a rich looking purple......Your clump shot is a pretty thing. I really like the morning look of Light of the World. I could go on, but let's just say they are all good ones..........Maryl Green June Bug...See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
