I can’t kill this weed...help!

I can’t identify or kill this weed. When it first popped up I hit it with Tenacity, thinking it was crabgrass. That didn’t work. Then I tried Weed B gon, no luck. Then Weed B Gon chickweed & clover, nothing. Then Spectracide Weed Stop, no dice. Help!

It is Japanese stiltgrass, an annual but a very aggressive spreader. And it does not respond well to a lot of herbicides....you need to get one that is registered specifically for its control (Tenacity or Milestone). If it is a relatively small infestation, it is easier and more efficient just to remove manually.

Thank you! I’ve sprayed it with Tenacity twice (mixed with a surfactant) and it did nothing. I know it was mixed properly because the same mix killed a couple other things, including crabgrass. I’ll have to look for another option. I have a lot of this weed throughout one section of my lawn. If I don’t find something soon, ill have to resort to Round Up.

So are you saying this boug I have will definitely shed its leaves and go into dormancy? Aww. I'm so spoiled by my tropicals-esp my jasmines that bloom for me all year through. But if it keeps coming back- I'll give it a try. So I take it then that the dormancy is not 'required' as such but it's just what it naturally does when its winter here? Toni, it's not a bonsai. I have it hanging at the moment by a nice sunny window. I'm not sure how cool the window gets in the winter- I can't remember now but generally my entire apt is very very warm in the winters and there's no way I can provide the boug a 'cool' spot as such. I'm having problems with my clivia for the same reasons. But thanks so much all of you for all your advice. I'm so glad I learned about the watering because if you guys hadn't mentioned that to me, I'd be merrily watering it like my tropicals.

3 weeds/grass that I can't kill??

Well this is the last of the pictures, so I decided to ask about this fast growing weed on the left and the broadleaf weed on the right. The fast growing weed reminds me of Johnson grass on the farm while growing up, but I don't know if they have that out here. Those pavers are 18x18in and it grew that large in just 2 weeks. The broadleaf weed on the right is simply a pain in the but, I can't seem to get rid of all of them in the yard. I did use dimension and it worked great for everything else, but this sucker keeps coming back. Weed b Gone max, seems to knock it back, but never kill them all. I should also mention that my property is surrounded by farmland and was farmland a few years ago. So I am not sure this isn't some old crop trying to come back up? Thanks in advance for any help on any of these weeds/grasses, I know that Round up type herbcide will kill them, but I am trying to minimize dead spots in the yard if I can.

3 things. Use Epsom salts instead of table salt with vinegar and dish soap. It fertilizes instead of poisoning the soil. I don' t know high EC water. Please enlighten me. Glyphosate was thought to be harmless to animals, because the chemical pathway it uses in plants doesn't exist in animals. True, as far as it goes. What we have learned since the early days is that there are two chemical pathways in animals that it does affect. This can not only harm us, but it is harmful to our intestinal microbes. This disrupts digestion. I agree that gardeners should try to avoid glyphosate use, but we really need to get it banned for agricultural uses too. It is common practice to spray crops like grains with glyphosate a few days before harvest. This kills the plant, making harvest more efficient with higher yields. Cost effective for the producer, but contaminates our food and is poisonous to the planet.

Ants, outside, are not a problem although their presence may indicate a problem. Look at your ants as a symptom of a problem rather than the problem itself and cure that and the ants will leave. Things like Dursban and Daizanon have been removed from the market for very good reasons, people would pick up the pellets on their shoes and bring them into the house where infants that were crawling would be able to ingest (eat) them along with older people that played on those floors., absorbing that material through their skin.

I may have the same weed in my yard, see photo. It was told it’s Pennsylvania Smartweed. It’s completely taken over my lawn. Tried WBG, no luck. Not sure what to do here either.

How long ago did you spray with Tenacity?

Tenacity is good...but it's not fast. Sprayed today, a weed can take up to two weeks to show much effect. Although usually, I do notice a definite color difference in seven to ten days tops, but my color vision is excellent.

Weeks ago. It has already done its job on crabgrass. I just picked up some Bayer Crabgrass killer with active ingredient Fenoxaprop...I’m about to go spray that right now. Hoping to see results.

Ps - good to see you back on this forum. Ive been absent myself for a while but im getting back into the swing of things at the new house. I have a lot of work to do. Does this mean you’ll read a Logan Labs soil test if I post it?? (Please please please...)

Tru dat. You can rubber-glove-damp-cloth it. (Seriously, wear the rubber glove, though, as you don't want skin exposure of Round Up for extended periods).

Yep, I'll read Logan tests and I've never really been all that gone for the last quite-some-time. But with my new job, I'm less consistent as my schedule is...Most Odd Indeed. :-) And I'm simultaneously working on other stuff at the same time and it's a confusing mess to anybody on the outside. :-)

Round Up is next if fenoxaprop doesn’t work.

I haven’t been around the forum in quite some time I but I thought I remembered a post saying you were done here...maybe I’m remembering incorrectly. Either way I’m excited to have your assistance getting my soil in shape. I have a feeling the report is going to be ugly. I will try to send the sample(s) off within the next week. I may do front and back yard separately to compare. I have different problems in each.

Why on earth use roundup on an annual? Just cut it before it goes to seed, or pull it!

Um...obviously other methods have not worked. Roundup will kill it for certain. There are plenty of times where Roundup is far more convenient than back-breaking weed pulling. And many weeds are very difficult to pull up. Really doesn't matter whether or not it is an annual.
