pond woes ;-(
Comments (14)so an update: Today was the first blazing hot day...so HAD to do the pond! Yup down in there cooking with the muck!ha! Rented a pond vac(Oase)$35, well worth the money!!!! Refilled to 3/4 so far, gonna rebuild the wall hopefully tomorrow, and rescued 7 baby fish. And an interesting part of the day...went to a neighboors and they told me of how they spotted a otter on the road right near my place! So now I KNOW who the culprit is!!! It makes me wonder about last year...I had one plant in the middle of my pond and had it tipped over about a week straight....but with the basket system in...I think that the fish could hide from the otter? maybe. The neighboors also offered me some babies from their pond to help me out too. we're talking just goldfish. I'm repotting my waterlilies and will get them back in there...whew, well worth the effort!...See MoreIt was a darn flower pot................................
Comments (4)Jenny, I'm so glad you resolved the problem. Every year I say I'm going to close down the pond, but in the spring I just can't do it. It is such a source of peacefullness and joy for me; as I imagine it is for you too! Anne...See MoreWater Hyacinth woes... advice needed, please help!
Comments (10)Thanks for all the advice! I now have heaters in my tank and the water is setting right at 70 degrees. I'm not sure if I'll have to turn it up farther or not. My Dad found some "plant" lights and we put those up, lowered them closer to the plants, and I increased their daylight hours to 14. We've noticed that the roots are now reaching more downward than before and fanning out all the little hairs, where as before they were kind of shrunk up and stayed on top. Any comments on that? As for the fish they love the warmer water!! They hang out around the heaters quite a bit and are a lot more active and friendly. They've been eating their fish flakes out of my hand, I'm so excited!! Oh, we also brought in some new plants but I'm not sure what they are. They started growing in our livestock tanks this Summer while we had the fish out in them. Since the tanks are going to freeze up or be drained, and I wasn't sure my other plants would survive, we brought some of these in and planted them in the gravel bottom. The fish really like them and went crazy over the algae that was growing on them....See MoreStill have one active Purple Martin nest; and hawk woes
Comments (5)Always a treat to hear about your 'babies', Caroline. We're on round three of Cardinals -- if the young ones a-courtin' now lay eggs. We have mature arbor vitae around two sides of our lot -- and some privit that they seem to favor. I was drawn to the creek last week by calling between a pair of (I think?) Flickers and their four 'kids'. (Whistling cries; spotted breasts; red 'gorgets' on their necks.) They were searching for insects on tree trunks -- and probably finding plenty of emerald ash borers. We have some big tree removal bills coming up!...See MoreMichael
