Deciding on a subject title for your post
Comments (4)Titles can be hard to come up with! I usually end mine in a '?' if I want info on something. So instead of writing:"Whatwouldbethebestwindowsizeforaretiredcoupleshouseinsoutherncaliforniawithamasterbedroomfacingnorthnorthwest? I would simple put: "Master Bedroom windows? I also get confused by acronyms, especially in the title line. I actually had to look up 'ARC' (architectural Review Committee). Sometimes I fall for a catchy but vague title: "you won't believe what happened!", but sometimes I'm lazy- it depends on my mood, and how much time I have. Obviously, I have a lot of time today!...See MoreSources and book titles wanted
Comments (4)META tags will probably not do the job. Google and the like ignore them (and for good reason, I could type whatever I wanted in there whether my page was about it or not), instead their bots scan the actual content of the page. This puts flash sites at a disadvantage because the content cannot be read. In my opinion, flash is a useful tool in creating multimedia applications and presentations but it should NEVER have been used for web pages. It not only keeps the page from being indexed correctly in search engines, but keeps the pages from being able to be viewed by users with disabilities (those using aural, braille, or text based browsers). If you are just learning web design, I recommend getting a book on XHTML (eXtensible HTML) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). The w3c (Wolrd Wide Web Consortium) has listed these as the standards for web content and design respectively. By using CSS to describe ALL of your design parameters you allow greater access to the content of you site....See MoreThe Importance of a Good Title
Comments (57)Liz's post on the May thread reminded me that I had the hardest time with remembering Levy's Small Island for a book club. I normally have an excellent memory - though not that of my younger days - and I simply could not remember either the title of the book or the author when I went to the book store. I must have checked the email 6 times before I finally wrote myself a note to take with me to the booksellers. Not a good title perhaps, but I loved the book. My introduction to James Lee Burke was In the Electric Mist with a Confederate General at the library. How could I pass up such a title? I'm embarrassed to admit, but my first Elizabeth Peter's novel, picked up purely for the title, was Naked at Lunch. I agree that Zelazny had some excellent titles - the Short story A Rose for Ecclesiastes is a favorite. How about Stone's titles? The Agony and the Ecstasy is good. For Whom the Bell Tolls Freeman Dyson's Disturbing the Universe M.F.K. Fisher's book about cooking during WWII food rationing, How to Cook a Wolf Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by Berendt A good title is much more likely to pull me in than good cover art....See MoreNatural gas range that doesn't require electricity?
Comments (27)I have a gas range top. It will light with a match when the power is out. I think its an important feature for people living in certain areas, ie hurricane prone areas or frequent electrical outages. When hurricane Charlie hit us, we had no power or water for over a week. It's a long time if you haven't experienced that kind of event. All of our friends had ranges and gas ovens that could not be lit with a match. We all had tons of food in the freezer thawing so everyone came to our house to cook. It was fun having everyone bring their food and cook it on my 6 burner stove top but I would never have a stove top without the ability to light it with a match. The oven is electric but I can live without that. My husband went on a long distance kayak trip many moons ago. One fellow was a professional baker who made an oven from a cardboard box. I wasn't there so can't give the details but stories are they ate well with everything he baked from bread to breakfast pastries etc he was the hit of the trip. How one can construct an oven from cardboard and use it to bake over a camp fire leaves me wondering. But...it's a true story Inga...See Morekathy_t
