I believe this furniture does not fit our new house. It is bulky and simply does not wow me here. If you all would be so kind and give me ideas on how to proportionately decorate this room to make it beautiful. Eventually we will also paint the walls, to a warm white. For now, I just want to make our new house, home.

I would also like to change the light fixture! the right size and more of a statement. Is gold a going away? Should I stick to black (wrought iron) and silver? I love the combination of metals, but for this area I would love something gold. I just don't want to make such a big investment and notice that a couple of years from now it was the 'fad' that went away.

I would leave the ceiling fan, just make sure it is wired so you can just use the fan part. Then you need lamps. Perhaps a sofa table behind the sofa against the right hand wall. Will you need to walk behind the other one? Perhaps an arc lamp from the corner between the FP and door to help fill the height. I love your blue rug.

I actually do not like fans at all. I am changing the light fixture along with all the others around the house. Just have to decide on black, gold, or silver. All the door knobs and floor vents are iron.

To start there's too much furniture in the space, especially with the fireplace and opening there. Those sofas are pretty casual for a "formal" living room as well. I'd get one sofa, push it against the back wall, and move the two chairs so it's facing it. I think a new rug, maybe something a little more elegant is in order too. Then it comes down to art work.

Oh the woes of trying to retrofit existing furniture in a new house! I move a lot and have run into this many many times. In my experience I usually end up relegating the existing furniture to the basement or giving away to friends/family then starting over. This is probably not what you want to hear. Ask yourself how you would furnish this room if you had to start from scratch and see how far your vision is from reality. In my opinion this room is screaming for two identical sofas pushed against the walls and a big square coffee table in between and maybe a simple wood bench in front of the fireplace. Keep it simple.

This post was to actually just get help designing it. I am planning on getting rid of the couches and rug. Table can go somewhere else and the chairs will find home in the second floor.

I am just so confused with the fireplace it does not fit the area, the fan has to go. But the tall ceilings make it difficult for me to find pieces that go in the space.

The room is a dramatic size, so can take some large, interesting pieces. Let's start with the fireplace, which looms over the room. Before you buy new furniture, hang a substantial raw wood mantel on the fireplace wall to break it up. Place a large, beautiful skyskape over the mantel, which will echo the outside sky visible through the flanking windows. Then pull one of the neutral colors from the painting for your sofas. More streamlined sofas could be in a beige linen, blue pillows, maybe a blue print rug. Do fill your fireplace with a huge armful of birch logs to lighten that side of the room--kind of a sky and earth effect.

Make sure the rug is oversized to balance out the height of the room and all that flooring acreage.
