Daughter is back-packing across Europe soon
Comments (24)I know what you are saying Chispa, but have you ever been to Japan? I have never met a more respectful and nice country of people, other then Thailand (my husband's home country). My point was, even if it's a nice place, like Japan, you never know what could happen. You have to be careful and can't take chances like you would in America. I am not a fan of going bar hopping in a different country, because when you want to go back to your hotel, in a different country/place, you are much more likely to get disoriented and lost. Then you could wind up in a rough section of the town/city where you are vacationing. The thing is, you've never been there before, so you wouldn't know where NOT to go. You don't know the country, so you won't know where the "seedy places" are. Please DON'T assume the "locals" will tell you or help you figure it out. I think as a whole, many people are too blithe about dangers when they travel, myself included. We have to be aware and more careful when we are out of the country. When my husband and I have been backpacking, we've tried to make ourselves look as un-American as we could, because we stand out to pick pocketers on the streets, so why wouldn't we stand out in a bar as well? So we were very careful and never went out at night. But again, meeting this Craigslist person is not a good idea. I too, don't trust anyone out there anymore. My Mom just mentioned to me 4 days ago about a Craigslist killing in Minnesota. It was a young woman needing a job and read about a Nanny position on Craigslist. She went to go for the interview/meet the family, but it turns out it was just a sick guy who raped and killed her. Her first instinct should have been to take a friend or family member with her, and turn around when she got to her destination, because it was a run down apartment building on the "wrong side of town". How could someone afford a Nanny on that side of town, let alone maybe have room for a Nanny? My question is where is our instincts? When we feel like something is wrong or unsafe, then Don't Do IT!! This is my point, that sometimes we are too focused on having a good time, on our vacations, to make sure that we are also being safe too. I completely agree with KathyG_in_MI. She has a very valid point, get your own passport ready, just in case!! I believe it's good for 10 years, anyway :) It took 8 months to get my passport. I thought it was unusually long, but my husband was thinking it would take around 4 -6 months so he wasn't too surprised that it took a while. So start the process now, even if plans fall through for your daughter, you never know when you need it. I know I sound like a "Doom & Gloom" vacationer, but I am absolutely not, but neither am I unaware of my surroundings now. I have had to learn the hard way, I am just trying to pass the info along to help anyone else, who might not have to learn like I/we did. ~ Amanda (Homemade)...See MoreIs this a good pick for a airline regulation backpack?
Comments (40)These will probably be sold out by the time I post. However, if not there are some good quality deals on ST for those who have many to buy for. Prices between $4 and $62 Barbour wools and other nice brands. Some come in different colors. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/altamont-strangelight-bomber-jacket-for-men~p~9998k/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2F&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod9998K http://www.sierratradingpost.com/barbour-hilts-sweatshirt-full-zip-for-men~p~8871w/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2F&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod8871W http://www.sierratradingpost.com/barbour-burl-wool-sweater-for-men~p~9802j/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2F&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod9802J http://www.sierratradingpost.com/barbour-flounder-sweater-wool-crew-neck-for-men~p~9803g/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2F&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod9803G http://www.sierratradingpost.com/barbour-flounder-sweater-wool-crew-neck-for-men~p~9803g/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2F&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod9803G $6 fleese http://www.sierratradingpost.com/fleece-pullover-jacket-zip-neck-for-men~p~7844w/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2Faveragereview~4%2Fcolorfamily~black%2Cblue%2Cbrown%2Cgreen%2Cgrey%2Ctan%2Cwhite%2F&colorFamily=01&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod7844W $4.50 hoodie http://www.sierratradingpost.com/50and50-hoodie-sweatshirt-attached-hood-for-men-and-women~p~9615c/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2Faveragereview~4%2Fcolorfamily~black%2Cblue%2Cbrown%2Cgreen%2Cgrey%2Ctan%2Cwhite%2F&colorFamily=41&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod9615C For a big guy...$9 http://www.sierratradingpost.com/moose-creek-carbon-creek-hoodie-jacket-fleece-lining-for-men~p~1827f/?filterString=clearance~1%2Fspecdataor~gender!men%2Faveragereview~4%2Fcolorfamily~black%2Cblue%2Cbrown%2Cgreen%2Cgrey%2Ctan%2Cwhite%2F&colorFamily=11&merch=prod-rec-prod-prod1827F Everyone needs a nice black T, $14 http://www.sierratradingpost.com/pendleton-deschutes-t-shirt-long-sleeve-for-men~p~8144k/...See MoreDaughter's Cooking While Backpacking Abroad - A Continuing Thread
Comments (82)Here is the latest installment of Daughter-san's travel-food blog. I must remonstrate with her to address the dwindling food content. https://katemakesthings.wordpress.com She cooked mussels in Marseille for the first time, and later asked me what interesting things can you do with this shellfish. I didn't know, since my main goal with mussels is to inhale them in great quantity and not let anyone else get any. Any suggestions, you might post on her blog, as we'll be in Marseille for Christmas and could try them. Okay, I'm starting to cook. SWMBO has made two pies and cleaned the house. I have to make a red wine-shallot-balsamic-mushroom reduction, roast a leg of lamb, make a honey glaze and do the ham, then make brussel sprouts with candied walnuts, those are my only jobs for the day. Hopefully I do them well, because SWMBO has been very upset with me. I have been buried in a neighborhood activism project. We are trying to get my neighborhood, Laurelhurst in Portland, listed as a Historic District. I have been writing a website, preparing flyers, setting up an online petition, building a database of houses and neighbors, linking that to an online map to track supporters and opponents, organizing teams of volunteers to canvass door-to-door around their homes, preparing lists of houses to contact and to avoid, beginning fundraising, and generally working a 30 hour/week unpaid job on top of my day job. Which is why I'm not posting so much here, and if you listen to SWMBO - and I would encourage that you don't - completely failing to pull my weight around the house. I've decided that there's been enough sitting around and bemoaning things without doing anything to change them. At all levels, from national to local. I've been encouraging all my friends to pick a cause and get to work....See MoreHas the rise in terror attacks given you pause for overseas travel?
Comments (42)My answer for this is also no. Are you looking for reassurance that it's okay to take a trip or a reason (an excuse) why it's not? Millions (it's really tens of millions) of people fly every day and visit major tourist locations outside the US. Let's assume there will be two terrorist incidents in the next few months, which there won't be. You'll be safer in an airplane and visiting overseas locations than you would be driving in your car near your home and/or spending time in any US city, because US crime rates are very significantly higher than foreign ones (in industrialized countries). The US has had more deaths from terrorist incidents in the last 25 years than any developed country in the world. If you want to be safest, it's best to leave here....See MoreOutsidePlaying
