Has the rise in terror attacks given you pause for overseas travel?
Comments (42)My answer for this is also no. Are you looking for reassurance that it's okay to take a trip or a reason (an excuse) why it's not? Millions (it's really tens of millions) of people fly every day and visit major tourist locations outside the US. Let's assume there will be two terrorist incidents in the next few months, which there won't be. You'll be safer in an airplane and visiting overseas locations than you would be driving in your car near your home and/or spending time in any US city, because US crime rates are very significantly higher than foreign ones (in industrialized countries). The US has had more deaths from terrorist incidents in the last 25 years than any developed country in the world. If you want to be safest, it's best to leave here....See MoreWhen you travel overseas....
Comments (35)Do you hire tour guides if not going with a group? If so how do you find them? No, we're not group people, and we prefer to plan our own trips. Do you purchase traveler’s insurance? Always. Wouldn't leave home without it. How many special activities (like boat rides) do you plan? As many as you can comfortably afford or physically handle? We choose our destinations based on what we want to see and do. It's never a case of, Oh, lets go to Paris, book the tickets and then, What shall we do? So we have some idea of what special activities we want to do. Then we do lots of research on websites like TripAdvisor, the destination's tourism websites and reading guidebooks from the library to see what else appeals. We do not cram every second with activities. Do you plan any down days for roaming at leisure or do you pack everyday with planned activities? Down days are always built in because it's supposed to be a holiday, not a route march. Generally we have a wish list of things we'd like to see or do if time and the energy are there, but don't have to tick off every idea (or even the majority of them). Do you plan your attire according to the country that you are going to, or for comfort? Both. I think it was Dave Sedaris who once said that it seems rude to visit someone else's country and arrive looking like you've come to mow the lawn. We always dress neat casual- pants and nice T shirts , polo shirts or collared shirts for general day wear, something dressier if required. We're representing our country and don't like to look like sloths anyway even when we're at home. Do you ever plan travel that is completely off the beaten path to countries that you know nothing about? We always research but have toured Viet Nam and the back blocks of Bali alone, as well as Hong Kong, Macau, Croatia, Czech Republic, parts of Germany, Poland and Hungary, New Zealand and London. We generally aim to go places where other tourists don't. How long do you usually plan in each city if going to several? No set time, because that's a very artificial constraint. No point in saying "Three days here, three days there," etc and then looking for things to fill up the days. We work out what we want to do anywhere, then work out how much time it will take to do that, adding a cushion for resting/things not quite working out as planned. Generally we like to stay at least three or so days in any one destination, unless it's just a travel stop....See MoreBackpack for flying
Comments (24)Terriks thanks about the Travelon info! Outside - I was thinking they might be better. I think I'd like ones that the compression changes as it goes up the leg. My only concern is I have small feet and wider calves. The measurements seem off. Funky - I'm headed to Hawaii to visit family! :) I just watched that video and I really, really like that bag. I think I'm going to get it. I like that it doesn't necessarily look like a camera bag. Thanks!! I have a few different Lowepro bags but they still look like camera bags. I think I'd rather have the sling one on me (worn as crossbody) and throw my purse (empty) in suitcase, then have another carry-on, I think backpack style, bag. I don't know. I still haven't had much time to sit down uninterrupted to dig around online. I guess I will take my camera. Anytime I make the decision to leave it behind I regret it. Maybe the newer iPhones are awesome for photos but I'm using an SE and many times I'm not impressed with the white balance choice and the shutter speed just isn't fast enough. I feel I have more control with my camera. I don't know what lens I'll take. I like and prefer using a prime lens and leave one on 95% of the time but that doesn't make the most sense in this case. I'd like to only take one (risk it) but I should take a zoom....See MoreRegarding packing and carryon only travel
Comments (53)Hmm, doesn't everyone's luggage have zipper compartments? That is where i put undergarments, socks, etc. I am not sure I get the purpose of the cubes. Maybe if they were packed by outfit. But honestly I don't find it hard to find things in my luggage, which is what most people are describing as the purpose? As far as TSA touching garments, your bag is only opened if something suspicious is detected. And even then, don't laundry services also touch your garments? Doesn't concern me. A few years ago I was packing when my cleaning person came into the room, and she offered to pack for me. I now do this all the time! I've always said she folds our clean laundry like it is for sale on a table at GAP. She even uses tissue paper for packing. One of my fave little indulgences. As for big indulgences, the Jaipur Oberoi had butlers who unpacked and packed your luggage. Nice!...See MoreRelated Professionals
