Rainy day flowers that Withstood the Rain

It's always interesting to see which daylilies withstood several rounds of rain, and some of it very hard rain.

(Right to Left) Forever Redeemed, Dance Again, Betty Warren Woods, Jeanne Deaver's Dream, and a bit of SC Francis Busby all looked good after two rounds of rain. It started raining again when I took this photo.

Purple Passion's Promise - a new one I got last fall is doing well. I love its rich color.

Mississippi Magistrate looks better in the rain than it has in days. It has the greatest number of buds so far in my garden - 25 on that scape in front!

All the rain this past few weeks has prompted quite a bit of instant rebloom. I see rebloom scapes coming on these cultivars:

I really like your Purple Passions Promise. Along with your seedling and Dearest Valentine, of course. I was expecting some friends to see the garden today. Fortunately, they put it off til another day. Some looked fine, but the majority were a soggy mess after the rains here this morning.

Nancy - There were lots of soggy and shredded blooms here today. I think it's good that your friends postponed their garden tour.

Fun musings, Rick! Another option to consider in the mix of reasons for less BS for you this summer is the notion that rain actually washes the BS spores off the leaves so there's less chance for the disease to take hold. Even in relatively humid weather, regular spraying and/or rain seems to have a positive impact on BS - the real kicker is humid heavy weather WITHOUT the rain to wash off the spores. Nightmare city, eh? Your observations about the health of your plants providing extra vigor has to be a factor in BS being less of an issue, even if plants don't have an immune system per se. Still, if you have a healthy 4' bush putting out new leaves constantly, you don't really notice the 40 of those leaves that are blackspotted, whereas if you have a 2' one-cane runt, those 40 leaves would leave it bare-nekkid. Quick recovery from a disease is almost as good as not having the disease at all, at least as far as roses go. Cynthia

Ya Ya Nancy said it right, you just copy and paste the tag line into this box. Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I just have a city lot, my front bed is small and I cram a lot into it, the pots are pot to pot. The back yard has a big iris bed approx. 40' x 8' and a couple of other beds mixed with irises and daylilies, nothing spectacular. I am proud of my 3 bald cypress trees, they have light and airy leaves. I also have about 20 crepe myrtles which bloom in the summer or June. I just line my pots up everywhere in the back LOL I hope the rain stops today because I have company coming tomorrow from out of town and want it to look nice. Somehow soggy flowers don't look too appealing. Can't really complain about the rain though because we needed it so bad. Dot

They are all very pretty and it dont look like the rin has messed them up.Sure wish I could say MONDAY BLOOMS ON A RAINY DAY, but,The 3 blooms I had today didnt even look like a pretty daylily.FIERY MOMENT bloomed again.Might have been its last reblooms.was so hot outside I didnt look to see if any more buds was left.And rain, I been wondering just what is rain the last few months, because we sure have not had enough to comment about.It did come a little shower Saturday evening, but had more lightening and thunder then anything.It was trying to make us thing we was going to get a lot of rain, but, didnt get very much, Close to a half inch and a hr later the ground was dry as powder again. Thanks Inga, my swimming pool is about 30 metres long, about 28 metres wide and about 5 metres deep at the deepest point. Chas, I put a lot of effort into getting that rainforest look, but rainy days really top it off. The hottest months here are October, November and December, but tourists usually start leaving in their droves during September which they find unbearable. The climate here is equatorial savanna, which means adding a lot of extra water to keep rainforest plants happy. FW, not the worst place I've lived in for mozzies, despite having lots of swamplands and creeks around. I have a strategy for mozzies which so far works quite well. Yes Gary, that's a Typhonodorum, it's just over 3 metres tall. You can stand under the lower leaves. The predominant trees in the garden are a few species of Ficus, mostly F. benjamina and also F. racemosa, plus Black Wattle (Acacia auriculiformis), Indian Almond (Terminalia catappa), another unidentified Terminalia species, and still some very large African Mahogany (Khaya senegalensis). I won't go through all the palm species. Only have the one small Tree Fern, Cyathea cooperi, but it struggles. The climate is too harsh for many ferns here.

Sword of Justice looks like it will be a good one, Wiggles worth is fun and attractive...love the name. Your bed shot is awfully pretty, and your two creations are gorgeous.

Great photos again, rain or not! Looks like Dearest Valentine will be the rebloom Queen of the garden! That is so cool! Still waiting impatiently here, so slow to get blooming started.

You can tell that Purple Passion is out of Jerry Hyatt. All of My Love to You is a tough plant. Sword of Justice looks good. Don't see quite as much pattern as in E's pictures, but it's clean.

Mantis - Karol told me I would likely not get the patterns on Sword of Justice in my climate. But I'm crossing it with cultivars that always show patterns in the heat. Again, I bought this one more for hybridizing than its garden presence.

Heavy rains are not what we usually have in summer in Oklahoma, so I haven't had that much experience with looking at rain damage. I was loaded with blooms when it poured down Sunday (over 2 inches) and what a sorry sight that was to see after it stopped. Gives new meaning to me to daylilies that can resist that kind of damage. Dearest Valentine has all kinds of merits to it. Looks great for you as always...........Maryl

There are so many here to comment on! Purple Passion's Promise is one I haven't seen before and you bet, I love it!! It's dark purple and it's out of Jerry Hyatt! I also love Wigglesworth, which is the kind daylily which puts a smile on my face., both for the form and for the catchy name. Sword of Justice is another I haven't seen before and it looks grand. Everything here in this post is beautiful and your seedlings are awesome.

They look good in spite of the rain! You and Kay sure seem to get a lot of rebloom. I usually only get a few as I am on the border of the N & S climates.

Brad - I do always get some rebloom. But when you consider the hundreds I have that are supposed to rebloom, but never do, it's a small percentage of my collection. I noticed all that rain yesterday pushed up rebloom scapes on Abilene Lillian, Men in Black, Forty Days and Forty Nights and Feathered Fingers. Two of my new seedlings have instant rebloom scapes, and I'm thinking about cutting them off so the plants can put more energy into multiplying.

Debra I really like Sword of Justice even if is not showing all the pattern. Lovely colors. And Mississippi Magistrate looks to be giving you a show with all those buds! Purple Passion‘s Promise has fabulous color.

Celeste, Kate, and Alex - My photo probably makes the color on Purple Passion's Promise a bit darker than it really is. I took the photo when it was overcast and sort of dark. The bloom is smaller than I prefer, but the color is so rich I wanted to try it.

Kate - I do think Sword of Justice is attractive, and I was happy just to see the little white arrows in the eye. Mississippi Magistrate surprised me with all those buds. I grew it before years ago, and it never did that well then. It must have found its sweet spot.

Purple Passion's Promise is sure a rich color. My picks today, though, are your seedling and Dearest Valentine. It's nice that your red seedling can take the rain. I can't believe your season is far enough along that you are seeing rebloom scapes. We are just getting started here.

Hoosier Nancy - My season began on May 17 with the extra earlies, so mine have been blooming for awhile now.
