Recently visited a couple of our city hothouses and "ogled" many lovely palms and other tropical's, while outside was snow, ice and -15ðC and you have them and more in your yard.

Thanks Inga, my swimming pool is about 30 metres long, about 28 metres wide and about 5 metres deep at the deepest point.

Chas, I put a lot of effort into getting that rainforest look, but rainy days really top it off. The hottest months here are October, November and December, but tourists usually start leaving in their droves during September which they find unbearable. The climate here is equatorial savanna, which means adding a lot of extra water to keep rainforest plants happy.

FW, not the worst place I've lived in for mozzies, despite having lots of swamplands and creeks around. I have a strategy for mozzies which so far works quite well.

Yes Gary, that's a Typhonodorum, it's just over 3 metres tall. You can stand under the lower leaves. The predominant trees in the garden are a few species of Ficus, mostly F. benjamina and also F. racemosa, plus Black Wattle (Acacia auriculiformis), Indian Almond (Terminalia catappa), another unidentified Terminalia species, and still some very large African Mahogany (Khaya senegalensis). I won't go through all the palm species. Only have the one small Tree Fern, Cyathea cooperi, but it struggles. The climate is too harsh for many ferns here.

Always admired the Typhonodorum. but really don't have the room for it . I redid the water garden last year and planted a giant form of an Asian lotus . So far it's been rather disappointing lol Suspect it's not getting enough sun and they usually take a while to get established

Two years ago I started a bed for tree ferns . because the neighbors had a row of high palms on the line so always shady . The new owners ripped out all the palms so now it's almost in full sun. The Cyatheas seem to be doing okay anyway but they do need some extra water

Years back I started giving away the Typhonodorum seedlings but eventually ran out of takers, the same problem - they get too big. Now I just cut off the spent flowers and compost them before seeds form.

Is that the big red lotus? It's native to Australia and southern Asia. I'm setting up a pond for some now and going to include some white ones. They do need full sun, otherwise they just waste away and die. Almost completed my lotus pond but the rains came and the dam flooded it over. Part of the plan though, when the dam level drops down in the dry season the lotus pond will become isolated. But high water in the dam and it becomes part of the dam. (Another of my crazy ideas.)

My Cyathea really struggled through the hot period, expected it to die actually. When the rains came it started to come good but does look "intimidated". Don't know if it would survive another hot spell. It's my 4th attempt.

The one I got is a hybrid callled "Shiroman" pure white semi-double flowers ,supposed gets 10 feet tall with two foot pads and 18 inch flowers So far it's been under 3 feet and 1 foot pads and no flowers at all lol Lotus come in dozens of different forms and colors both temperate and tropical Since you have a good sized area have you thought of some of the larger water lilies.?? Victoria
or Ferox come to mind or some of the larger hybrids . ?? You need a very large area to grow them among the worlds most awesome plants
My area is above ground only 5x10 f eet so I'm very limited here is a pic of "blue Goddess" in summer glory

Gary, I went to a place near Melbourne that specialises in waterlilies and lotus. They had a huge area which was more water than land. They had a lot of different colours of Lotus (Nelumbo) in mass displays in these huge ponds. And they had a huge array of waterlilies (Nymphaea). They also had some green houses with tropical Nymphaea and Victorias. The Victorias weren't on display at the time. It was quite a good set up, with cafe/restaurant and decking out over the water.

I actually bought some Victoria seed not long back and it should arrive in the mail soon. So looking forward to get it growing. They say from seed to a large flowering plant only takes 2 to 3 months. Over the dry season there'll be no room for them so hopefully I'll get a lot of seed from them for next year.
