Little girls and unicorns and rainbows and cookies

Elery's granddaughter Emaline just turned five. Her birthday party "theme" was rainbows and unicorns and I was pressed into service for the cookie supply:

Just plain sugar cookies, with a powdered sugar glaze, but they came out well, I was happy. The cookies were nice and chewy and the frosting had a bit of Penzey's orange extract, not enough to taste "orange", but a nice little bit of flavor. I made two dozen and in spite of birthday cake being available, the kids ate them all.

I made two colors, but since I'm only able to post one picture when I start a thread, you got the purple one!

Oh plllog, my brain went back to before it had a more adult filter : a prick with a toothpick! LOL!!! Apologies! No offense meant to toothpicks, this just struck me funny....

We celebrate both Passover and Easter. Passover is generally just my immediate family (DH and 4 kids) and I admit it can be somewhat harder for me as I have no foundation for it and hubs does not like me messing with his traditions (unless it is something he wants to change, like have lamb). I was also worn out that day so we had brisket (which my 17 year old did in the crockpot), haroseth, salad and a almond-lemon torte with berry sauce. I did enjoy the seder as the 2 youngest ones were able to participate fully and help with the reading. Dh tries to go without leaven the whole Passover week and my 13 year old daughter wants to jump on that bandwagon, so I will do my best in that regard this year and next year will plan things out better to accommodate them. Easter morning, our church holds a potluck breakfast. I made a low carb upside peach coffee cake. It was made with coconut flour and it is a recipe I hope to play with more in the future. The nice thing with a breakfast potluck is it seems more people are willing to bring food that they did not pick up at Wal-Mart so it was quite filling. After church, I was ready for a nap but we went to my sister's house for her Easter dinner. They generally eat differently than we do and we were quite full but still partook. My contribution to that was a chocolate cloud cake from Nigella Lawson. The cake is flourless and there was a large mound of whipped cream on top. I will have to make that again sometime soon, I had forgotten how good it was. We grabbed a couple of rosebushes that were on hold on the nursery since we were in town and when we came home, I was happy to not eat anything else until the following day.

You're killing me, Annie! I'd never be able to pull this off -- not kidding! I'd be laughing too hard and who knows where the spaghetti would land. That said, I live among a dedicated, dedicated I tell you, crew of pranksters. I'm going to throw the spaghetti idea out there and will almost be able to see those wheels will turning! And because I believe you have a similar crew, I'll share this with you. DD and SIL celebrated first anniversary this weekend; you know, paper. SIL, who fits right in, texted me this pic with "had to sneakily install in bathroom and then wait for DD to notice when she went in" HA! I love this kid. I found the Eggnog Snickerdoodles on the cooking forum years ago. I made them last night and they were very good! I couldn't find Brandy extract so I just used cognac instead. I also added a little bit of cinnamon. Eggnog Snickerdoodles 2 3/4c flour 1 1/2c sugar 1 c butter, softened 2 eggs 2 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp brandy extract 1/2 tsp rum extract 1/8 tsp nutmeg Sugar mix: 1/4c sugar 1tsp nutmeg Mix butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat. Add flour, cream of tartar brandy and rum extract, salt, soda and nutmeg. Mix well. Chill. Shape into 1 tsp sized balls. Roll in sugar mix. Bake 8-10 minutes at 350Â° or until cookies are lightly browned. Yields 2 dozen. Recipe easily doubles with no problem.

I am similar with my clutter, @Lori Wagerman_Walker and @Anne. Quite good at organizing drawers and cupboards but terrible at picking up after myself. @Oakley, I finally started to tackle (and the term is apt) my "office" last week and moved everything out into the living room. You can't imagine the mess. (Marie Kondo's trick of putting all the books in one spot works really well for me.) Need to give myself a deadline for this big organization project because it could easily drag on and I'll be left with piles of random homeless stuff in the living room. @Kate E, your drawer looks great! Pat yourself on the back. :) What's really helping me purge this time around is reading (library) books and watching YT videos on minimalism. I've also started reading an organization book that is a lot more profound that any other I've read on the matter: "It's Hard to Make a Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys" by Marilyn Paul. I heartily recommend it to anyone continually struggling with organization. (Again, thank you to everyone who chimed in! I loved reading the different takes on this subject. Did my best to thank everyone for their comments but it looks as if some thank yous didn't register? Might be a site glitch.)

dcarch, the kids did not hesitate to eat them, so it's still food related!

LindaC and Martha, I did kind of "cheat" on the unicorn heads. They're fondant, made with a small horse-head cookie cutter. I saw a similar ornament on line, pre-made, but did not have time to order them, so instead I just blatantly copied the idea, LOL. The horn needed a little more work, I thought they were too big, next time I'll know better. I do think fondant is disgusting, but the kids all seem to love it, and so they gobbled them up.

Oooh, Bragu, glitter.....why didn't I think of that?

Lars, I liked the purple too. The others were SUPPOSED to be fuschia, but turned out more orange, I didn't like them as much.

I also did some very sloppy freehand rainbows, but wasn't happy with them, they looked a lot like the logo for a local Mexican restaurant!

Annie, as you know, kids have a different definition of "disgusting". It's a unicorn. It doesn't matter what it tastes like--it's awesome! And it's so danged cute, I, the avowed fondant hater, would eat it and think it was awesome too. :) And the purple is perfect.

Plllog, I think you're right, kids have a different concept. It's sugar so they love it, LOL.

I know look at it and think I should have added a tiny mini-M&M eye, or maybe one of those little round decorative sugar balls bigger than a sprinkle.

OK, this has devolved, so I'll add a picture of the "rainbow". It reminds me of the logo of a local business (sans the cactus, of course), The Beltline Bar, since we're talking about bars anyway, LOL

Yeah, it has a bite out of one side, I wasn't fast enough. The cookie, not the logo. (grin)
