Please tell us about your visits in June and July
Comments (3)Hi - This is my first year putting feeders up as I really didn't believe we could attract hummingbirds into our yard until one came right up to me in the yard to look at my bright blue earrings. :) I have been a little obsessed with them, ever since I visited my parents in Mesa, Arizona; they have a steady stream of hummingbirds all day and I just loved watching them. So I hung up two feeders and also hung a planter box of brightly colors flowers and within a couple of days, I had 3-4 different hummingbirds visiting my house all day long. I was so amazed. I am in Washington state and our lot is very shady, but they came anyway! They particularly like one feeder that is red and has the perches. The other is purple with no perches and they only go to it as a last resort. I have had 2 males and 2 females (all Rufous's I believe) and they would chase each other away constantly. In almost the entire month of June, I barely saw the feeder without a hummingbird on it, but now I barely see one on it at all. Not sure if this is typical or not - I keep changing the solution to see if maybe I did something wrong, but they are still barely coming around. And the flowers in the basket are still in full bloom! I miss my birds!...See MoreTell us about your avatar picture!
Comments (55)Missy May, yes, Murray was named after the dog on Mad About You. He looked just like him, although my Murray had the beagle coloring and Maui ( the tv Murray) was just two colors. Their faces were almost exactly alike. My friend once met Maui in an airport. He was going to an interview somewhere. My Murray was the sweetest dog ever. He was turned into the shelter as a stray. The people who found him posted signs for two weeks. They had other dogs and didn't want another, so took him to the shelter. I can't imagine not going to the ends of the earth to find this dog. He was the best. Here he is in his old age....See MoreMrBlubs, can you tell us about your variegated "Domino" peace lily?
Comments (5)It's extremely easy to grow, the only problem I ever have is browning leaf tips from using tap water. Though since I switched to using water out of my pond, I don't see this issue anymore. It also was one of my first houseplants so it's been through a lot of trial and error. For growth, I'd say it grows moderately. It always is sending up new leaves. Mine has lost most of its Variegation as I used to keep it 10 feet away from a South window on a desk all year. This word work in the winter as the sun is lower so it would give it some direct winter light, but come summer almost no direct light enters my room except for my windowsill. I've since moved it about 5 feet from that window on the ground in an area where it's not obstructed and gets lots of good indirect light and it's incredible how some of the new leaves are coming in! One was so white at the beginning I thought it was a spathe forming. For flowers, when I initially bought it at Costco (of all places) it only had one spathe on it, but other had multiple ones and went as High as four. I bet this is from the greenhouse conditions though. Mine usually flowers, then the spathe starts to turn green as another one forms. So I usually have a constant flower on it. I bet if I moved it closer to my window I'd have a lot more but I'm happy with the one. Though, I have in the past had three spathes at the same time and 2 but normally it's just the one followed by another one as it dies. I do love peace lily's. I'm actually on the hunt for a small normal green one or a smaller version of mine to fill my now empty wall pot. Here's some pics; The first one and last one (sorry phone is being difficult) are the flowering process. The older one begins to turn green as a new one forms And the middle is a very variegated leaf (looks green in the pic but it's white) Good luck with yours when it comes! I'm sure you'll have no problems or difficulty growing this specimen! If it can survive care by 13 year old me I deem it invincible....See MoreTell us about your first date!
Comments (8)There were two K - 6 schools in my town. When I started Junior High, I met a boy from the other school. We were together in a dance class, where we had male and female dance instructors. Bob and I were always chosen by the instructors to partner them when they demonstrated a new step, and Bob always chose me to partner him. He invited me to a hayride his church group was having that fall. We became 'steadies' through Junior High -- which meant, dear reader, that I wore the dog tags he had made in his name (probably at the local hobby shop or the Museum of Science and Industry). His parents took us to high school and college basketball games and we played badminton with them. He kissed me once -- in the back seat of his parents' car! (He had an older brother, and I think he had more 'ideas' than some of my school friends without sibs.) This all fell apart without warning at the end of our 8th Grade year. He asked a new girl in town to the graduation party! I was *devastated*. WHAT had I done wrong? Shortly before I met my DH, I was having a drink after work with a fellow I'd known since kindergarten. He brought up Bob's name and asked if I knew that he and two other boys I'd also known forever had beaten Bob up one day after school. Seems Bob had "greatly enlarged" upon our kiss. I was dumbfounded -- mostly because I had had no idea I had three protectors of my virtue! Bob became president of a large national firm, and he and his wife and three kids moved to the town where my DH and I had settled. His eldest son was our DS's baseball coach in a summer program. Another son played Little League with our boy. Bob and I never spoke more than, "Hello", but one day he came over to sit with DH and me at a game. He looked like he wanted to say something more than idle chit-chat, but was uncomfortable about it. The next I knew anything about Bob he'd shot himself one afternoon at home, unable to live with alcoholism. I've since heard that the 12-step program asks people to apologize to anyone they have 'wronged'....See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
