tell us about your composting background
Comments (19)My father was a "conservationist" long before people called themselves environmentalists. 40+ years ago I remember my family making an organic fruit spray that involved grinding up onions and things, smelled awful to me, I guess that was the point. We always composted, and our garden was down a short steep hill from the house, so instead of walking down, in the winter especially, we would just stand in the backyard and fling the kitchen scraps down the hill to the garden. In my first apt. it was very hard for me to transition from putting kitchen scraps here, newspapers for recycling there, cans in a big container, paper trash for burning in another place, etc. to just throwing everything out into one trash bag. Almost painful. I started saving my aluminum then (1979) even though I had no idea where to recycle it. I just knew they were recyclable and I hated throwing them away. (Remembered the video I had seen in 1970 on the first Earth Day and how much energy it takes to process aluminum into cans.) After I had moved the large bags of aluminum cans with me TWICE I finally gave them to my sister. She worked for a brewery and knew where to recycle aluminum. 20 years ago when I got married and we bought our first house, we automatically started a compost pile. My hubby's family composts, too. Whenever people post that they don't have enough room for a compost pile, I tell them about that first pile. It was in a ring of chicken wire between the air conditioner and the house. It was a townhouse, we had houses connected on both sides to ours, and a very small yard. We know it never smelled, as the pile was directly below our bedroom window. We also started saving our metal cans and glass bottles years before a local recycling center opened, just knowing that someday one would come along. Guess I am what you call a rabid environmentalist. When we moved to our second house, we moved the compost pile with us, along with some weeds to compost! We are on our third home, where we have 3 permanent compost piles and 2 smaller seasonal ones, and several lasagna beds, including a new one about 25 X 4.5 feet and 16 inches tall. Basically we kept moving to houses with larger yards, now we have 5 acres. I brought home about 40 bags of other people's leaves last month, and I get old produce from a local weekend market to make extra compost with. I have never had too much compost. Comments (5)I think the nice thing about the Chief Arch/BH&G software is that it's user friendly. You might not know all the tricks for perfecting details without using it awhile, but you can create a 3D in no time. The other thing is that there are so many versions, so you don't have to get an expensive one, and there may be some older versions out there for less, too...But, of course, the newer ones have more material and appliance options, so are more fun. :-) Here are 2 kinds of renderings of my kitchen design and how the kitchen is turning out so far: And here is a rendering I did for Malhgold and the link below is a thread in which you can see her kitchen and how it compares to the drawing (there were some design changes next to the fridge and in the island after this rendering was made, but this is the latest one I had loaded on photobucket): Here is a link that might be useful: Malhgold's thread with photos...See MoreTell us about your poolhouse. And we want pics!
Comments (6)Our poolhouse specs: - approx. 14' x 12' - pirate themed - two electrical outlets for ceiling fan/light, satellite TV/music, small fridge, outdoor speakers, outdoor lights - window installed on rear wall (leftover from a new door remodel when we put a door in our spare room to have access to that side of our house from pool area) - recently added a dart board w/an old sailing ship on doors (great find from a garage sale last weekend--only $3 and hardly used...until now!) - plumbed on outside wall for outdoor shower (still to be built) - built last summer by DH & DS - took about 2-3 months and cost approx. $2000 - $2500 for materials (we had the 3" raised foundation and support braces installed, and DH ran 1" PVC piping underground out to pool house for electrical wiring when our pool decking was poured 3 summers ago) It's not the most beautiful poolhouse, but it suits us well and looks great in our yard. Here are some old photos from last summer. We've since added bamboo shades to the "windows" & "door" area, more pirate-themed decorations, hooks on one wall for hanging towels, pool goggles, different bar height chairs inside, etc. Good luck w/your pool house. Just remember to take your time in planning it out! -Melissa...See MoreYour Funniest Buying/Selling a Home Story . . .Tell Us!
Comments (71)When my husband and I were selling our house last year, we went through a string of bad luck. We staged our home and put a lot of stuff in his office (he had his own business). Needless to say the building the office was in burned down and we lost a lot of pictures, but mostly just junk. We finally sold the house only to have the first buyers back out 4 days before the closing, but we were locked into buying our new house. We then put our home back on the market and prayed we would sell it in a newly SLOW market. Anyway we had many potential buyers come back and view the house 3 and 4 times but after 5 weeks still no offer. With the stress of holding 2 mortgages we were desperate. One day when my husband was commuting home from work it just so happened he was sitting next to a realtor. They got to talking about our house and she mentioned to him when ever she needed to get a house sold she would burn sage leaves to ward off evil spirits. That weekend we were holding an open house. Unbeknownst to me, as we were leaving the house my husband ran back in to "get something." He was taking a really long time so I ran in to find out what in the world he was doing. I saw him running through the living room with a smoking piece of aluminum foil and the overwhelming smell of burning herbs which smelled very illegal! I wanted to kill him. At the same time our realtor arrives and was nearly knocked back at the smell. At the time I didn't think it was funny and I was fuming. Needless to say, we got an offer that day, and we closed in 4 weeks. The ironic thing was our buyer was a Drug Enforcement Agent. He must of knew it was sage and not something else....See Moreaprilneverends
