Do you use the Dictionary?
Comments (18)If I'm at the computer, I just use the Google search box. A dictionary definition is usually one of the first responses. Just FYI, dictionary lookup is one of the many text message services offered by Google. You send a text to GOOGLE and in the body of the message, you write, "define complaisant". Within a few seconds, you get a text with the definition. (Btw, the other Google text service I use all the time is phone lookup. A text saying, "Phone number Rudy's Restaurant, Salem, MA" gets you a retuns message with the business address and a clickable link for the phone number. I have a data package for my phone, but it's much quicker to text Google....See MoreThe home building dictionary- translations for the uninitiated
Comments (34)How about a few from the other side; "we're just looking"-means once we figure out you sound like you know what you're talking about we'll ask you 50 questions and pick your brain and waste your time because we found it cheaper at HD or Lowes. "we'll be ready after the first of the year"-means even though you were under budget, returned every phone call and re-quote promptly, we won't be calling you back even after the 5th call, made in late Feb. "I've got my own installer"-means even though he declined a pre-installation meeting he now will be holding my feet to the fire wanting more trim, etc. and making clear how HE would have done it better, faster, quicker had he been able to do it his way. "Just give us a ballpark figure"-means you just scarred the hell out of us and even though we are told the same figure other places we will be shooting the messenger who was honest & first. And finally "We can't get the financing"-means we can't get the financing because we didn't do our homework before we wasted your time....See MoreWhat unusual words are part of your vocabulary?
Comments (74)Lovely words today! I'd never heard slumgullion, ever! And there are recipes for it posted on the 'net! One that I love but isn't really common enough for general speech is obfusc. Even the dictionaries are unclear [teehee] on the word, though obfuscation is in general use. (Obfusc has a general meaning of murkily dark, though it has some kind of special meaning in music) Then there's subfusc, which means dully dark or dusky. Drab (in its coloration meaning) :) It is also what they call the academic dress at Oxford and other universities that have robes and uniforms. Arcane is particularly useful if your audience knows it, but it's not easily discerned from context. And an appropriate description of these words. :) Remonstrate Macerate Masticate Gesticulate Pseudobulb Syllabub Shortfall Windfall Deluge Disarticulate Disgorge...See MorePet peeve... the way some words are used
Comments (273)I was also thinking about this thread after hearing the the News Quiz on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. One of the items on the News Quiz asked something to the effect of "This influential individual died 50 years ago this week", of course Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the correct answer, but my objection was to the usage of "died". Yes, he died, but more importantly, he was murdered, nay, assassinated, and their use of "died" sounded beyond non-optimal, it sounded WRONG. This thread remains very thought provoking, and I appreciate everyone's musings....See Morevee_new
