OK, after reading beverly's post, I removed the rug. And after removing that large, dark rectangular rug, it was actually a tie between the round and the square side table. And I placed a roundish lamp on the square table, and it really softened things up. I am going to go to the paint store and see what the folks there have to say about gel staining a factory finished round end table. But I have to tell you, 'm leaning towards the square because in real life it looks more classic and like a higher end table than the round...wow, this project is never-ending!! Thanks so much for your help, much appreciated and will post an update.

Linda c, there are so many facets to design that don't just involve "acquiring" items. While I love pieces that make me happy, I also want the room to be pleasing to the eye. Design is an art form and with that I follow both principles and elements of design that were part of my formal education in design school. These are more scientifically based and exists through all genres of design. In this case of coffee tables, we explore the concept of Variety. If there is lack of variety, then a space feels flat and when a space has too much variety, then it lacks unification. I know that it's really dissecting the elements but I think that when people pay closer attention to these subtle nuances, then I think their space reflects it.

I'd make the small area on the left a storage/ closet with mirrored front door and add molding. Absolutely do a bench seat with storage at the window. Round table ( with leaf expansion). Bench that doubles as coffee table or bench at the table. small but comfortable couch on the long wall (left). A few chairs and a small occasional table. Don't forget to add wheels to the table so it's easy to clean and move for parties. Should seat up to 9 adults with this configuration. Make sure the bench/ table is at least 18" wide and either 6' long or 2 sets of 4' in length. Don't forget to hang curtain rods height above the window for a more spacious feel. Add a chandelier to the window area that is moveable ( chain hooks). This should give you versatility. Good luck!
