New Years Nibbles
Comments (18)Happy New Year to you! Your party sounds lovely, we are having a similar sounding party at our house tonight. The backyard rink is just about frozen, so with any lucky the kids will be skating for much of the night and the dads will stand around the fire pit drinking. I haven't decided what's going in the large glass drink dispenser yet, but it's usually a variation on a paloma, since tequila and grapefruit soda is my personal fave. I like to take one strong drink, then keep refilling with fresca, since I'm kind of a lightweight! We have loads of champagne too, so I'm sure I'll switch to that at some point. That does seem a lot of meat on your menu. Maybe california rolls instead of sushi? I'm planning on a french fry bar (I know, I'm obsessed with my new Actify!). I have potato, sweet potato, and butternut squash fries and a bunch of toppings. Since the fryer only makes about 3 potatoes worth of fries at a time, at 30 min a bunch, I'm making them all ahead of time and will put them back in for 5 minutes to re-crisp and heat up. I have a load of toppings and dips. We also have puff pastries with different veggie fillings, veggie trays, and a chocolate fountain with way too much junk to dip. We are not a meat-eating crowd, and I always tend to go overboard with vegetables. I like always having a vegetable within arms reach. I might be the only one that eats them, but it's my house! For the skating crowd, I have popcorn, pretzels, hot chocolate, and chocolate chip cookies. I've learned from past years with the rink to always have those four things on hand so that I can feed a large group without going broke. Have a wonderful party and a very Happy New Year! Comments (60)Sally, I think your dad's term 'bully beef' is a historical one; that term is what the British soldiers used to refer to canned corned beef. (That's what I get for reading too many British war novels. I can recite most of that un-PC poem 'Gunga Din', as well.) I've never had S-O-S. Can anyone post a reasonably authentic version of the legendary glop, like what you would have gotten in an Army mess tent? Waldorf salad, ambrosia...don't care if I ever see any of those again. Likewise divinity fudge. Hated that stuff. (As I type this, though, I'm eating a slice of Red Velvet Cake.) Comments (5)PEACH MARMALADE Family Favorite Blend of sweet and tart 2 dozen medium peaches peeled and chopped l small jar of maraschino cherries 2 medium oranges 4 teaspoons of sure-jell sugar Grate orange rind and cut remaining orange into sections with seeds removed. Put peaches, cherries, and orange sections through food grinder. Then put into large dutch oven type container. Add grated rind. Add l cup sugar to each cup of fruit mixture then mix well. Add 4 teaspoons sure jell and cook over low heat until thick, about 30 minutes. Put into clean, hot jars. Seal while hot. I have given these in a Christmas basket along with cookies and candies for Christmas. Baby food jars make great containers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RED PEPPER JAM 6 Large Red Bell Peppers 6 Large Green Bell Peppers 5 to 6 Hot Peppers l tablespoon salt 3 cups sugar 2 cups white vinegar Take out all center and all seeds from bell pepper and hot peppers. Grind the cleaned peppers and add salt. Let stand for 2 hours. Drain well. Put in sauce pan and add sugar and vinegar. Cook over low heat l hour or until jam consistency. Pour into hot sterilized jars and seal. Process for 5 minutes in a boiling bath of 1/2 inch water. This jam is so delicious with cream cheese served with crackers. If I give this away at Christmas in a basket I will give a small tub of cream cheese away and some good crackers with a suggestions on how to serve....See MoreWhat's for dinner 11/20?
Comments (5)DH and I just had meatloaf, rice pilaf, and sauteed spinach with garlic, olive oil, and red pepper flakes. He will get apple pie for dessert; I will get herbal tea. (BTW, he is the skinny one, I am not). The way we eat, it should be the other way around. LOL!!!!...See More- 7 years ago
