Trouillard, 1868 France.. a Bourbon..

I've been growing this rose in 3 gardens since 1990... it's one of those once bloomers that you feel you could never be without... I've had it on an arch, against an obelisk, and now on trellis... it's capable of rambling or becoming quite a large shrub in quick time.. but I enjoy pruning it and keeping it under control...

This rose has a clock in its head because without fail, it will always open its first flower on May 15... not a day before, or after...

Sometimes we have a tiff and fall out... she tells me to get stuffed and bounces back again.. her best moments are the first 3 weeks... from mid June she will blackspot and later flowers can ball a bit... on a big shrub she will flower right up to June 30th.. 6 weeks of blooms.. but I've never got one later than that date..

The scent, on a warm day, is that delicious sweet old rose perfume with a hint of apple.. on a cool day, not so much...

Melissa in Italy... if you are looking in, you might like to compare with your 'Duc de Fitzjames' and see what you think... apparently that rose can turn out to be this one..

I am delighted to announce - a repeat bloom !... in fact I have several coming out... I mentioned earlier that I never got any repeat on this rose, so this is a first for me...and it still smells good too... I'm not sure what I've done differently, if anything...

Yes, that might be my rose, and the description is convincing. There are apparently two roses named 'Duc de Fitzjames' in commerce. One is darker and one is a medium pink: mine is the pink one, and I've seen it suggested somewhere that it might be 'Mme. Lauriol de Barny', which I've never grown. Does yours set hips? Mine does. My rose is easy to propagate and grow, always good humored, very handsome, a thoroughly satisfying rose. I grow mine as a rather leggy, arching shrub, not pruning it much beyond cutting out some of the oldest growth. I don't know when mine starts to bloom, but at this point it has been in flower for a while. I don't think it lasts as long as yours does. Most years summer arrives around mid-June, and the heat finishes off most of the roses.

Oath, I'd love to see pics when your Leda blooms. She looks so pretty. Olga, I have bs in my garden to, it doesn't bother me or the roses too much. They just drop their leaves and regrow new ones. There are only 3 roses in my garden that get totally covered. It doesn't bug me enough to SP them though. Melissa, thank you for the warning about AdS, now if he struggles or dies, I will know it's not me. Robert, I have noticed we have similar taste. I don't post alot, but I read almost every day. If I remember correctly, didn't you order alot of them from Sequioa? That's where alot of mine are coming from. I hate to see nurseries close, it's just sad. I wasn't going to order but a few this year, but when I found out they were closing, that changed the plan quickly.

Marlorena that must have been really frustrating since Kew Gardens is one of your favorite roses. I can completely relate to not having it planned or a proper spot for it. That alone must have made the mix up even worse. If they just sent the wrong roses and it was a rose you detested I don't think it would have been quite as awful to get rid of it. How irritating that must have been! Your garden is a such a delight though. The mixture of colors and companions with your Herbalist rose are just perfect. The creamy white, pink and lilac is so charming in your photo of Mme. Lauriol de Barny and Desdemona. I also really like the mixture of textures in your fourth photo, even with the empty spot you referred to. Your garden gives us a little glimpse into your character and the way you view life... it's artistic, beautiful and fluid. There's a special harmony to your garden that I find inspiring and I just love seeing photos of it. :-)

Emily, I just saw that Lynette (oldrosarian on here) had some photos of MLdB on HMF. It's really beautiful, Marlorena. The lavish blooms are so sumptuous.

The growth habit and shape of the blooms lead me to wonder if it could be related to Mme Isaac Pereire, perhaps an ancestor of MIP.

It's an intriguing and magnificent rose.
