Kitchen Design Help Needed - New Construction
Comments (31)First of all, the wall between the kitchen and great room is load bearing. Some portion of it will need to remain, or intrude into the hallway. And costs will go up because you may need some steel there. It's already spec'd at a really big beam to carry the weight of the existing opening. Removing the wall isn't going to be a $1.98 change. And it leaves you without a lot of wall space for all the things that need wall space in a kitchen. Therefore, I'd get rid of that opening to the hall in favor of having it be more wall space. Second, if the width of the kitchen is the 12 and change, then obviously, the other leg is at least 2' shorter, if not more. This is taking the original blueprints in order to be sure of what will work in the space. It leaves a stub of a wall to the one side of the fridge (gotta make sure that it's no more than 30" if you're gonna use a standard depth, or 24" if you're gonna use a cabinet depth. This gives you all you want, just maybe not in the orientation that you want it. But, unless you switch plans entirely (my recommendation) this is about as good as you can get....See MoreNew construction kitchen design help
Comments (8)"Island not shown because I don't have it planned out yet. " Sorry for all the unanswered questions. But yes, the island would be a barrier between the fridge and stove - a landing spot of sorts and prep area as it will be food grade butcher block, I hope. I have room to do a 48 inch aisle between the sink and island - was thinking only 40 though since I'm not having a prep sink in the island and could picture dripping wet things from one side to other - but really how much more difference would 8 inches more of dripping make I guess. Good point about the dishwasher being open and being able to move around it. Elderly residents requested counter height bar stools which is great as I didn't want a high rise island anyhow. The dining room is a few feet away and they will most likely sit at the table there doing a puzzle most meal prep times anyway. The windows are not drawn exactly because the cabinet design was done before framing. Now that we are in the framing stage, we will meet again with specific measurements. I will zoom in on our house plan pdf and do a kitchen floor plan as you've requested. Thanks for the input thus far....See MoreNew Construction - looking for feedback and help with kitchen
Comments (19)Building on some of mama goose and funkycamper's ideas, what about something like this? I didn't draw in all the details of appliance locations in the laundry and pantry (like finding a better spot for the freezer or exact appliance locations in the kitchen). I just wanted to give an idea of how the spaces could be arranged. Sizes of laundry, pantry, and master closet can be adjusted as needed. Put a door between master closet and laundry. This gives longer stretches of wall for the kitchen both against the back wall and along the office wall. Refrigerator is recessed into office wall, but you still have a closet in the office. I would gladly have the pantry door around the corner to have more wall space in the kitchen, but you could also have the pantry open directly from the kitchen if you prefer. Edited pic to adjust some details:...See MoreNew construction - kitchen layout feedback request
Comments (10)If I were to give up the prep sink on the island, and I'm assuming you don't want to move it to the perimeter and have the cleanup sink on the island (I'm doing that but most people prefer not to have their cleanup sink on the island) then I'd do the following, which is to switch the sink and the cooktop. The disadvantage is if you still want two dishwashers, you'll lose pantry space. If you can get away with one dishwasher, then you'll be fine. However I personally think Mama's arrangement is a heck of a lot better and allows for more than one person cooking at the same time. This arrangement doesn't....See MoreSara
