Kitchen of the Week: Clean Design and Amazing Views
Hidden storage, clever wine nook and a streamlined design keep a Seattle kitchen simple and modern
A custom wine storage feature, panoramic views, and hidden storage areas combine in this modern and immaculate Seattle kitchen. This kitchen was built in a new addition to an existing home on the west slope of Queen Anne Hill. A neighboring house blocked the potential view of the original home, so Allan Farkas of Eggleston Farkas Architects designed a new construction on an upper level. This open loft area contains the kitchen, dining room, and living room.
Although you wouldn't expect it from the sleek modern lines in these photos, the original home was built in the 1940s, and had been in pretty bad shape. "Believe it or not, there's an old house in there," says Farkas. Because the homeowners were on a tight budget, they did a lot of the work themselves, and recruited family and friends to help.

While at first glance, it looks like this kitchen is seriously lacking in storage, Farkas was careful to create enough space for the clients to store their belongings without taking away from the simple and streamlined design. The barn door just past the kitchen is a full pantry, and the refrigerator is located around the corner. This way, Farkas was able to avoid restricting upper cabinetry, and the clients were able to avoid buying a new fridge beautiful enough to have on display.
This open living space is relatively small, but the owners didn't ask for a lot of space. Both owners are from Northern Ireland, and lived in small homes with their large families most of their lives.

The great room takes full advantage of the incredible views of the Puget Sound and the distant Olympic Mountains.
The bottom of the maple island is visible from the ceiling in the home's entryway. A simple blackened steel staircase with wood treads takes visitors from the private bottom floor to the common space on the upper loft.

One of the homeowners created the abstract art in the same rich colors as a bottle of red wine. Absolute Black granite countertops contrast richly with the smooth maple cabinetry. A flat electronic stovetop lends to the kitchen's seamless design. Eco-friendly bamboo flooring, which blends perfectly with the light maple cabinetry, was installed throughout the space.
