Windows Design Dilemma Bedroom

Not sure what window treatments to install in bedrooms.

The bedrooms of our condo do not have a great view so we would like to have some sort of window covering that lets light in, however, need something that provides black out at night. ALSO, heating and air conditioning vents are right in front of window ledge so need to be careful not to block. Any ideas?

I recommend accordian blinds. You can get top-down (bottom-up) versions, that keep the bottom half private while letting light in the top, and you can choose various combinations of light-filtering and light-blocking.

We have light-blocking top-down blinds in our family room, and we get good light all day (and a view of the garden but not the trash cans, heh), but can close it out for watching a movie if desired. And it's all inside the window frame, so nothing needs to drape down where the vents are. I mean, if you're desperate for the look of drapes, you can add them on the outside edges, but I think these kinds of blinds are modern and clean looking.

I used a board-mounted box pleated valance on the box bay in my dining room. I screwed the board right into the soffit above the window. The way mine was framed, there wasn't enough room to hang a rod high enough to cover the top of the window trim. I made long panels of the same fabric for my living room windows. I used honeycomb shades on all the windows (not room darkening, but I did consider them). Most of the time I leave them up, but we don't have a guest room and the sleep sofa is in the living room, so privacy is an issue when we have overnight guests. Totally Confused

Hey There: How about bottom up top down operating honeycomb blinds...there fabric is black out and there is only very little light leakage on the side (compared to roller shades for example). Thanks Flo Mangan. The panels do look nice. See pic below.....I know you will be envious of the shower curtain / painter's tape window treatment that I currently have. :-) Because of the configuration of my outward facing windows I don't think they would be practical for me. As you can see in the pic below of the outward facing master bedroom window, the16" bulkhead on the left would need its own panel. Plus the other panels would stack up - probably on the right. The windows go wall to wall, so there is no open wall space on either side of the window for the panels to go. So for a small-ish bedroom window I would have maybe 2 1/2 feet of always covered window. I don't want to block the light and as well make the window and room look smaller. Same issue for the smaller guest bedroom.

To my eyes that blind is very depressing. I would remove it. I prefer rooms that are bright and cheerful. I would use grommet top panels ( white or cream) on a decorative rod. Get enough lined panels so that there is ample fullness when closed. If more light control is needed I would use simple white pleated shades with the panels. White plantation shutters would be nice, too. Window treatments should look nice from the outside as well as the inside. Quite often those shades look like sheets or paper bags from the outside. Your beautiful room deserves better :).

Top-down, bottom up cellular shades as recommended above would be a good solution. The shades can be "blackout" style so when closed, all light is blocked. I bought Bali DiamondCell Blackout Cellular Shades.

Some great suggestions above. Check out the Hunter Douglas line of products offered in "Duolite" whether it be honeycombs, roman shades, or privacy sheers. They all provide exactly what you are looking for in a window covering in various styles.
