What window treatments for this street facing bedroom?

We’re very slowly approaching the end of our new DIY master remodel. It’s finally time for window treatments, but our front windows are facing the street at ground level. There are light posts in the street so we’re getting much more light in at night then we’d like. With the navy walls I was thinking white curtains but I’m not sure that will help with cutting down on light. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Black out blinds with waht ever you want over them for drapes and you really need a headboard for that bed

I would keep your blinds and add curtains. White would be pretty, so would a white dust ruffle on the bed.

woven wood blinds will add to character & go with blue of your room!

could even opt for white blinds.

Your master is gonna get a beautiful nautical vibe!

If interested you can put up a wall mount bed lamp in beautiful brass or bronze or white.

it will free up your side table & also beautify your room.

Also some work of art on head board wall..

may be a simple wall sticker of a funky image or quote !

I think black panels would look nice ThreeD. What type of fabric were you thinking of using? I think even a cheetah print to match the pillow in the middle would look great instead of black. Or cheetah sheers. Just some thoughts.

Real wood horizontal blinds will let in a lot of light between the slats (to wake you up at dawn), and can have a heavy look, so I wouldn't use those in a bedroom. I think a curtain will have the problems of proportion because you can't take them to the floor with the heat baseboards, while short curtains will look odd. I would go with roman shades as Deb Zilch mentioned; there are pretty fabrics you could get, and get them lined to make them light blocking. Alternatively, cellular shades but with a double honeycomb to make it more light blocking.

I don't have any yet-- it's in design phase. We've decided on fabric covered vertical blinds with an angled top. Seems to have the fewest constraints, most options, and reasonable cost.

Here’s a couple more photos to show what the room looks like. It’s not very big. I was think some white square frames over that dresser. We’re currently working on refinishing it, eventually the whole thing will have the paint stripped off and look like the drawers.

Are you in a subdivision with an HOA? If so, the HOA pays the electricity for the street lights. The HOA can ask the electric company to black out the pane that faces your window. I just had this done last month :)

We do not live in a neighborhood with an HOA. It’s just popular in our neighborhood to have the house sized street lamp posts in their front yard. We do get a lot of spill from the street lamps at the park on the corner. I’ll have to see if the park has considered blacking out the sides facing the neighborhood. Thanks for the advice!

Love the Navy walls.

Room darkening shades or blinds. You will be happy you did.

A good nights rest is worth every penny!

Then you can pick any drapery you love, whether they are sheers or not.

Similar situation here—street-facing windows and bright streetlight outside at night. Wood blinds with blackout curtains (and sheers in between for daytime) work great.

@chuppi Any brass lamp suggestions for the wall mounts? Our house overall is fairly contemporary (this is the more transitional) looking room and I’ve had some trouble finding a brass fixture I like. There was brief discussion of something like a white globe, but I’m not convinced. Also would something wall mounted look odd with us having a ceiling fan?

I would keep the white blinds and add white black out curtains which could be closed at night and should block out the light.

I know! We've not found something that adequately matches the existing furniture yet. The existing furniture was given to me by my late grandmother and I'd really like to find something that matches or compliments it instead of replacing the whole set. Boyfriend is opposed to going with some upholstered so we are left to find a matching wood finish.

That wall is looking exceptionally naked though.

Is there a recommendation out there for the best white black out blinds? Currently the ones we have are just cheap stand ins. I didn't know if it was best to have blinds match throughout the whole house, so I've been stalling until we get some of the other renovations complete to make a decision.

Hey There: How about bottom up top down operating honeycomb blinds...there fabric is black out and there is only very little light leakage on the side (compared to roller shades for example). wall mounts definitely doesn't clash with ceiling fan... you don't have to worry abt rules & styles.. go with your heart. Get rolling with what you find, budget practically. You can always change it if you feel like it. Have fun..

Room-darkening or 'black out' shades, preferably mounted OUTSIDE the window to provide more light blocking.

Cellular light-blocking shades will also help with your energy efficiency.

I would also recommend any shade you do in this window, be top down/bottom up. This way you can enjoy your privacy, and bask in natural light.
