Window treatments for a box bay window in master bedroom?

Our planned master bedroom has a box bay window. The bedroom without the box bay is 16 x 16 and the box bay is 9'6" wide by 2'6" deep as planned.

We will likely put a couple of club chairs in the box bay with a table in between, and a couple of apothecary style or other floor lamps, with an ottoman between the club chairs in front of the table.

My question is how do you put window treatments on this? Our other windows (one on each side of the bed) will likely have panels and perhaps a small simple fabric treatment between the panels (not sure what that is called), as we may do motorized blackout shades in the room (hubby's job requires daytime naps sometimes!)

Do you put panels on either end? Do you put panels in between the windows in the box bay? I am afraid with any other fabric treatment it may be too busy so I don't know what to do about light control, etc.

Right now we have plantation shutters in our bedroom with panels and it is heavier than I want but it does a great job of keeping the light out when needed.

Any ideas welcomed!

Is the bay floor to ceiling? Is there a soffit above the bay.I think thr fabric shades your referring to are roman shades. If you chose those for the windows beside the bed then I would stick with the same for the bay. You can get them with a light blocking lining. A pic would be helpful to determine if panels would work on the bay. Off hand I'am thinking no. Might close the room in too much with more panels. Another treatment that does a excellent job at blocking out light is a room darkening cellular shade.

One of the 5 windows in my office has its right drape panel a bit behind a secretary desk in here. It doesn't bother me, but you may feel otherwise. My roller shades block the sun and gives me total privacy if I choose to close them at night. My shades cover the full glass part of my windows, but not the outside trim. My windows are standard double hung, and yours appear to be sliding windows. If you do get shades, no matter what material type, and close them at night (just an assumption on my part) wouldn't you need to raise them in order to open the window if you choose to? Would that bug you at all? I may be prejudiced toward drapes, as I make them myself and love fabrics, so change them more often than others might. You can do the panels On the slider which can be pulled aside (they can on windows too) for unibstructed view when opened. It’s also acceptable to shutter the windows with panels and then just place panels on slider. I would do three full panels testing the two windows as one large one. Have them shuttered that way as well so it’s not as choppy. The space between the slider and window i would do one double panelto dress both sides. Or you can do a natural woven shade or roman shade on double windows that pulls up and down. Neither of these will give you view unless opened all the way. Maybe if we saw more of the room we could tell you which would best suit the space.

Olivia- answering your question-I guess what you had originally is what I like. Navy curtains straight down. Skip the valance, would be great if you got rid of those wood blinds, but I understand if its a no go zone. Can I suggest room darkening curtains, they work well with blocking sunlight in the mornings. I did this in my room, just to avoid the whole blind thing and when I open the curtains the full window is exposed and lets in all the light. Agree with doods- longer rod, fuller curtains ( wider in size ). I have had 2 curtain panels stitched together to make a wider curtain before.. Not too high curtain rod setting either. Maybe a little puddling on floor to give it that romantic feel. Navy curtains I like, nice contrast against the lighter wall. Is that gold ( yellow ) in that artwork? ..so maybe add some gold accent in the room, either in throw blanket or throw pillow. Good luck!

They are two different things so they don't need to exactly "match" -- only coordinate -- same material and/or color .... generally the same style. One idea could be to use the standard two-rod -- top and bottom -- idea for the door to add your curtain to the door -- hem at both top and bottom with rod inserted through them -- .and then replicate that on the windows ... using the same length fabric on the door as you need for the windows, visually creating three windows the same length. With the bottom of the fabric secured at the bottom hem, you'd avoid fabric heat/ac issues. Consider wood or faux wood plantation shutters for the two windows so you have no fabric issues around the heat/ac areas. Use wide slat wood or faux wood blinds for the door. To the extent possible, keep the lengths the same -- affix the top and bottom of the door blinds to the door at the same level the top and bottom of the plantation shutters are affixed beneath the window.

This is a house we are planning but that is not built. As far as the fabric on top of the panels - not a roman shade, but like a valance. I can't find a link but very simple but mainly just to hide the hardware of the light darkening motorized shades . . .

Can't figure out the box bay though!

I love the look of pretty valences in a bay window. Could you do valences with a black out roll up shade? I guess it all depends on your decorating style. Most of the time you can have the shades up so you have the light and view and pretty valences. Do you have a view?

I used a board-mounted box pleated valance on the box bay in my dining room. I screwed the board right into the soffit above the window. The way mine was framed, there wasn't enough room to hang a rod high enough to cover the top of the window trim. I made long panels of the same fabric for my living room windows. I used honeycomb shades on all the windows (not room darkening, but I did consider them). Most of the time I leave them up, but we don't have a guest room and the sleep sofa is in the living room, so privacy is an issue when we have overnight guests.
