At least it's not a tornado watch, but STILL!
Comments (3)Watch went to warning and then it hit - a least the first cell is past but we had pea-sized hail plus downpours. These are 4" tall plants (planted deep). Another cell coming about 8pm. At least I just planted half. And lovely, forecast shows a low of 44 (remember that's in town and it gets colder here) Tuesday night and highs only in the 60's this week. They'll survive, but I'm wondering if I should hold off til Wed to plant most of my stuff that hasn't seen that low a temp yet......See MoreWhy I still watch HGTV
Comments (40)Other than a couple of the Bravo realty-based shows (Million Dollar Listing etc) I only watch HGTV, by which I mean I have a few shows set to record new episodes and that's all I generally watch on tv other than the evening news my husband is addicted to seeing :). I only watch television to be my complete mindless entertainment plus prefer to utilize the majority of my leisure time reading so I've never gotten interested in all the must-see shows that require seasons' worth of view time that everybody seems to like. Never seen Downton Abbey or Scandal or House of Cards or really any of the popular stuff....HGTV lets me get my 20 minutes' fix (since it's always recorded I never watch commercials) of views into houses: what people want to buy or what people buy and fix up. I like Property Brothers and it's a fast watch if you skip the first half hour (because who cares about the first already done house and the ones they don't pick) and start with whichever house they select. I like House Hunters and some HH Int'l and the spin offs renovation and where are they now versions. Love all the beach and tropical house hunting shows. Like Flip or Flop. Don't care for Love it or List it because of the hosts, same with Fixer Upper and also because FU seems to do the exact same house style every time. Although come to think of it Property Brothers hasn't done anything other than that same white shaker style/quartz counter/gourmet appliance look in forever either. My enjoyment may be tinged by the fact that I didn't get cable tv until 7-8 years ago so I missed what seem to be the halycon days of yore that many sigh wistfully about. I do recall dimly watching some fix up show many years ago with people gluing grass to walls and doing other strange things so I'm a bit dubious that HGTV was all that perfect LOL. It serves its purpose for me which is to allow me to unwind every evening with a little entertainment that requires no brainpower or extended commitment....See MoreDo people still wear watches??
Comments (67)I've worn a watch since I was grown up: don't remember the circumstances when I got my first one. En route home on furlough from my mission in Korea in 1957, I attended a conference near Geneva, Switzerland and came to know a young woman who worked in the World Council of Churches office there. She'd worked with a manufacturer of watches earlier and took me there to buy one. The name was "Jeanrichard" and as father's name was "Richard" and stepmother's "Jean" I was pleased. Dad didn't want the second that I bought: he, who always wore a watch, had one that pleased him ... but my youngest brother, also named "Richard" did, so he was pleased with it. A feature that they offered was that they needed no winding or batteries: there was a lever inside that wound their spring as one moved one's hands. I guess there was adequate storage, as they never lost time while one slept ... don't know if we ever let one sit still for an extended period to find out how long they kept the time. Don't recall how long it lasted: several years. I've had several since, usually Timex, and it's hard to find local watch repair places, to get the batteries replaced. My second last, the watch guy told me when it stopped not to replace the battery, as the insides were plastic and so badly worn that they weren't worth the cost of a battery. Daughter recently sent me her second gift of an Indiglo Timex, that lights up with the push of the crown to show the time in the dark ... and this frugal fella shed a couple of tears when viewing the postage fee of $U.S. 15.50 (about Cdn$20.00). ole joyful...See MoreIf you watch Jeopardy . . .
Comments (55)I think I would do badly as a contestant, because I would probably be incompetent getting my buzzer to ring in fast enough, lol! Typically I do well with categories about Literature, Medicine, Geography, Movies/t.v. shows, and North American and European History (not knowledgeable enough about history of most other Continents.) Music and sports depend greatly on the era, regarding my knowledge level. I do okay at the 'Before and After' categories, but I'm downright horrible at categories connected to Mythology, Opera, Religion, Art History and Science Fiction. But oddly enough, even if I do pretty badly during the general game, I seem to have a weird knack of getting the Final Jeopardy response correct, which accomplishes nothing, if one doesn't accumulate enough money beforehand, to win the game!...See MoreOlychick
