Why don't you do the labor yourself of removing the tile? It's not hard to do. You just punch a hole in the wall and pull the tile and the drywall off. It might take you several weeks to throw it all away in the trash if you have just one can. Then you can see what's up behind your tile. If I was in your shoes I'd call around to a few drywallers and see how much they would charge to drywall your bathroom if you demo the tile. I got my drywaller to put up Wonderboard around the shower- ask them how much to do that too. Then you can put any tile you want around your tub and on the floor, and get a new vanity counter top from Home Depot. Tiling a tub surround and a floor is not hard. It's like building things with Legos. Otherwise, you could just remove the stained wallpaper and find one in blue and red- stripes, florals, cherries or strawberries. Renee

wendypool, Most tap water can be adjusted in the pool after filling. Some tap water is very low in Calcium. This can be adjusted while the pool is filling by adding Calcium. Low Calcium water filling the pool can draw calcium out of the plaster. Calcium is the usual accelerant for plaster contractors. This combination of low calcium fill water and 2% calcium accelerant could be a contributing factor to the look of the plaster. Area drought causing falling water tables can affect water quality. I've seen changes in calcium levels in fill water drop by as much as 100ppm which does affect the pool start-up process. Over trowling and hydration issues are mostly seen in the bowl of the pool where water sits before plaster and where laborers are pushing plaster up the wall more aggressively. Check cracks are common in hot weather on steps and benches because they are covered with water last as the pool fills. These will look like egg shell crazing. Pebble finishes have stone held by plaster (mortar) and have a harder finish because stone is harder than plaster. These products look great and have less moudling because of the stone finish and the acid wash they receive. Poor application is the downside and occasionally result in loose stones being common. Still think that your problem can be solved by lowering the ph for a period of time to resolve the surface color issues. Good luck.

cdisimone - I have very similar color cabinets and granite in my kitchen except my backsplash is lighter and floors are very dark porcelain, wood look tile. I've been looking for a color that will work throughout the majority of my house too. After weeks of deliberating, I started with my dining room and painted Shoji White last night. Not sure I like it....it does not look warm or creamy in my house at all. It looks like a very light cool gray. :-( I was going more for a warm white so I can brighten things up but still have the warm, cozy feel. I'm going to give it a few days before continuing on through the rest of my house. My suggestion is to paint an entire wall or much larger sample on your wall before deciding!
