Rose (climbing?) for a semi sunny spot
Comments (12)My choice for your spot would be the HMusk Nur Mahal. Check that the color doesn't clash with brick or siding. I find that Nur looks great against a darker background. Dortmund is a very different and brighter red. I need to check googleearth to see if the one we have going up and over a trellis is visible from Satellite. I expect it is. I've had Fourth of July and would replant it in a modern bed where I could enjoy the blooms backlit by sun. Mine didn't reach the heights you want. Another color option would be the noisette Fellemburg, which has a charm of its own and a delicacy tht matches the Bridal Wreath....See Morehow to train an untrained climber?
Comments (5)I've had success training uber-stiff canes by doing it very gradually:you tilt the cane in the direction you wish it to grow, only forcing it slightly ...got to be very careful; don't break it!.It may be possible only to tilt it very slightly at first. Tie it into place, and WAIT. A month or so later, go back and tilt it a little more ,tie it again, WAIT. It takes time and patience, but can be done. If you have no place to tie the cane, you can just tie it onto something heavy laid on the ground, using a long string...bart...See Moresuggestions for lax cane climber good repeat
Comments (16)Susan, I have the tea-nosiette Pleasant Hill Cemetery that might work. It's been one of my cleanest roses (no spray), always has a bloom or two, has been a robust grower and has very, very pliable canes. This spring the poor thing was still a baby and I hadn't gotten it trained on anything and it was just a heap on the ground covered in small to medium sweet white blooms. I read somewhere that is is extremely easy to root and considering what a pathetic stick it was when it arrived and how it then took off I believe it. You're more than welcome to come down to Franklin and take a cutting of it you want. Here's Vintage's write up on it: Here is a link that might be useful: PHC at Vintage...See MoreHow to Train Clematis Climber
Comments (4)Clematis climb by wrapping the leaf stems (petioles) around a support, preferably 1/2" or thinner. So to get it to wrap around your post you would need to give it something to cling to, such as wire fencing fastened loosely to the fence posts. You could also attach trellis netting in a matched color to your balusters. Bird netting is almost invisible against a dark surface but is difficult to remove a vine from if you need to prune. In my experience, clematis may want a bit of encouragement to go the way I want to get started on the trellis, but needs no guidance once it attaches to the trellis. Clematis like sun, and IME will bloom best with at least 6 hours, though a few will bloom with as little as 4 hours. What would be your preference as far as height, color, vigor, and bloom time?...See Morealtorama Ray
