Buying Washing Machines
Comments (1)Hi - here in the UK we have always used front loaders, at least I vaguely remember my mum having a top loader in the fifties/sixties but I have used a FL for 35 years or so. I am a very busy person & was a working mum with a son who played soccer (very muddy game) & daughter who horse rides & my & hubby needing work clothes looking smart so lots of laundry. Also my mother at 90 has only just got a washer(since her brief flirtation with a TL years ago) so used to do a lot of her laundry. Never had time to faff about with complicated laundry arrangements but found a FL absolutely fine. Just sorted clothes into darks, lights and those needing a very gentle wash. Washed at the lowest possible temperature to save energy - easier now as detergents are designed to wash at 30C. However last machine did get a dark stain on the rubber inside door - no smell though. With new Bosch just wash at hottest temp on empty with a descaler every couple of months. I do think on a general note that perhaps my mother was right all along & with a machine we wash things too often. Excepting underwear do we really need to wash clothes after one wear - unless they obviously require it. And I am very fussy about smells....See MorePlease help me buy my first washing machine!

However, if you purchase an Energy Star appliance you may qualify for a rebate. Check the Energy Star web site. Also, check your water and city for any programs. I purchased a Samsung set, on Black Friday, and after various rebates the set(yes, washer and dryer) cost less than $800. It's the 218 model, which has no silvercare and no steam. This unit is larger than my old Neptune FL, and will actually wash one of my king size comforters. I did have to wait two months to get the units. However, the rebates key off the washer. So if you are just buying a washer, the savings could really make a FL worth buying. The rebates I got were also dependent on the "tier" of the unit. Basically how energy efficient it was. So some of the TL are listed, but you may not get back as much money. I've noticed that some of the LG's have really been dropping. Even Electrolux was giving a rebate. Manufactures are going to have to unload their goods. The economy numbers are not going to be good. So you may be able to purchase an Energy star appliance cheaper. It's just that you will have to up-front the cost. Here is a link that might be useful: Energy Star...See MoreBuying a new washing machine and Jan 1
Comments (32)Hi Turbo, Like you I don't visit the forum too often these days and I rarely post messages (been there done that) and yes I am very busy too these days with my business life and taking care of my mother every other week etc - it gets pretty hectic sometimes on those weeks but it's worth it. I sometimes check for fun though just to see what's going on here and noticed a few posts by you - so it's good to check in with you. For anyone who is interested, I posted my wash performance comments because unlike some who say that they don't have to wash clothes that are very dirty - I do wash clothes that are very very dirty - so I have some experience in this regard. Of course I'm not saying that a front loader couldn't wash them clean but am just saying that a standard agitator machine also does just fine. For those of us who have been around here a while, we've been through this sort of thing time and time again (no need to go at it again) but the comments about CR's latest ratings made me curious. I did get the June issue and they pretty much say that TL machines are struggling to get good results while meeting the 2007 energy standards. That's a curiousity since I'll bet that you can override many or all of those energy restrictions if you want to - for example I know that you can override them using a Fisher Paykel machine. Turbo, your comments about more people giving realistic assessments about real life FL performance is something that I'll have to check out - as I said I haven't combed through here for a while. I'll check it out when I have a bit of time. Take care Turbo and good luck to you and your family....See MoreTo Machine Wash or Not To Machine Wash...that is the question
Comments (18)I hate to tell you this, but washing is no guarantee that fabrics won't bleed later. I have no idea why, but even fabric from the same bolt might act differently. Just yesterday, I had a small scrap of RJR panel print to make a label for a quilt. Spritzed it a bit first with cold water to press first, and very soon, the reds ran. All the fabrics were rinsed in cold water before I used them, and nothing ran. So, I got another idential scrap, and rinsed it in cold water first, to check. No running. Huh? So I got another and spritzed it. No running. It was all from the same bolt. Hmmmm. I guess I will just use one that didn't run. Go figure. I'm left to wonder what will happen if the quilt itself ever gets washed. It would not be the first time I've had this happen. BlueBars...See Moregirl_wonder
