Please help me buy my first washing machine!

When we bought our house several years ago, it came with an old Kenmore top loader which has finally begun to give out. I looked at Consumer Reports, but when I came here I saw that many of you think CR does not give very reliable advice. So if anyone has suggestions for me I'd be very grateful!

The machine will be on a concrete floor in the basement so noise and vibration are not an issue. I do not need large capacity, nor any bells and whistles -- in fact I prefer as little electronic stuff as possible to reduce the need for repairs. I can't decide if I should go for FL or TL. The basement is damp so I worry a bit about the mold issue, though I'm willing to leave the door open and wipe down the gasket. Water and energy efficiency is great; yet I really don't want to spend more than $800, or have a machine that will need a lot of servicing.

Any recommendations?
