Some Heat Wave Blooms and a Dog's Suggestion for Staying Cool
Comments (9)What a fantastic variety of rose blooms Tammy, and the dogs look like they are having such FUN!!!! Little E loves her ball even when the weather is in the 100s, lol. But that's the nature of border collies, :P! Oh, Bless, the animals at the Shelter can really appreciate all your hard work for them! Tammy, we too are getting recordbreaking heat as well, heat that's not been here for over a century as well. Beth, what makes us all roast in the Midwest is that we are landlocked, far away from the oceans. Where the oceans are at, at least coastal cities can get tons of coolness from summertime melting polar caps recirculating and cooling down the area. Here we have nothing but drought and terrible heat. I actually need to change my zone description too. I can grow teas now in my locale...that's how dramatic the weather change has been for us. I actually tried to change my zone a few times, but Gardenweb kicked out my changes. I will try once more. This thread reminded me to try again, lol!...See MoreSuggestions Needed: Little Dog Changed Since Big Dog Barked At Her
Comments (3)I would suggest you watch Caesar Milan's new show 'Caesar 911'. I believe it's on the Nat Geo channel. There are a lot of people that say they don't like his approach to training but most of the negativity is based on what they saw on his old/original shows. Caesar has come a long way since the first tv seasons of him rolling aggressive dogs in order to become alpha. He now uses a more positive approach in training (and sometimes even uses treats) to get the response he wants. On the new show he stresses the correct way to walk your dog, and of course how the owner needs to stay calm and in control. In the meantime you need to make sure your dog doesn't run ahead of you toward any dog since that could put the other dog on the defensive. When you see her start to react to another dog, correct her and wait for her to calm down.......but keep in mind that you have to also look at how you're reacting to the situation. Watch some of the episodes and you'll see how you can apply some of Caesar's techniques....See Morethinking of switching dog food brands, suggestions?
Comments (22)This is just a thought and a shot in the dark really, but I noticed the Gentle Giant food has brewers yeast in it. It's used in kibble as a probiotic and normally is good. However, when I had my dog tested for outdoor allergies the results said she's allergic to all yeast. When our Vet talked to us about it, she said it was "fairly" common, can start at any age and it can make a dog smell. For our dog, the symptoms included her ears but her skin was also very itchy. Her being allergic to yeast was the last thing I would have thought but since changing her food to one that doesn't have brewers yeast in it, the issues have ceased. We spent a small fortune trying to find the right food for her, but the one she ended up responding the best to was Canidae Pure Salmon and it's really made a difference. She sheds less and her coat is soft and beautiful. A lot of people like the Taste of the Wild brand and it's a good food at an affordable price but our dog didn't respond as well on it....See MoreNeed help getting sick dog to eat - food suggestions please!
Comments (45)I am not there so I can not make the decision nor do I necessarily have all the facts. But when my pets become terminal I do what Sammy said. Most vets, in my experience will dance around the question, or if they do tell you often people will hear only the parts they are comfortable with. These are the rules that work for me. Think of your pet's 3 most favorite activities. When they are down to one it is most likely time to let them go. If they are down to none you may have waited too long. Too early is always better than too long. Food is a big motivator for most animals. When they will no longer eat they are telling you something. Either they are ill or they are dying. That is how nature works. I give my animals the best last days or day possible. I do not expect them to "tell" me. It is my responsibility to live up to their trust in me to follow through in their best interests. On their last ride they get a whole bacon cheeseburger. I am always with them when they cross that bridge. I prefer them to walk in under their own power. To leave this world happy, not frightened, confused or in pain. I am so very sorry you are going through this. It is never, never easy....See More- 7 years ago
