Some Heat Wave Blooms and a Dog's Suggestion for Staying Cool

Well, Knoxville broke an all-time high today by reaching 105 degrees. First time in almost 150 years of record keeping for the city (our poor neighbors 3 hours away in Nashville reached 109!!!) I spent the day in and out of the a/c volunteering at the animal shelter...trust me, moving 70 dogs in and out of runs all day at 10 minute intervals so they didn't get too hot is very wearing!

Once I got home I was able to take a few shots of the roses that are actually blooming through the heat, and let my own dogs play in their kiddie pool for a little while :)

I'm amazed, so many of your blooms are so good looking in that heat.

Double knock out lives up to it's name, it really knock you out with it's neon color.

Diana, sounds like you've been really busy, as soon as your ponds finished we want pics of it and your garden. I never knew until recently why people painted their porch roofs blue, I've never seen it done up this way. Because of the extreme summer we're having my garden is fried but still alive, I was prepared for the same ol' same ol' no ripe tomatoes etc., etc., etc. HA! so whether we get a hot summer next year or not I'll be better prepared. The funny thing is we had so much winter damage, lost so much a couple of vines I thought were dead came back late and then put on unbelievable growth. Since it has cooled off here I hope to get the rest of my bathroom painted, I had to quit it was so hot the paint was drying streaky. If you haven't seen it the saga of the renos we are doing is in conversations, it all started because of a spark LOL. Not fancy by any means but do I ever love my new floors. Besides the unprecedented hot dry summer we're having the damage done by the pine beetle has turned BC into a tinder box, some of the fires were of course started from people being careless but the majority have been started by lightning strikes. I'm sure some have also been started by broken glass acting like a magnifying glass, so if seen it's a good idea to pick it up and dispose of it safely. There's a couple of fires burning on VI but nothing close to us, fingers crossed. The woods are crispy dry around here so until we have a few good rainfalls it's hold your breath time. In the link you can see the damage that has been done by the pine beetle, we really need a few really cold winters to knock this little beast down, until this last winter they have been too warm so as much as I whine about them we really need a few more really cold winters. Jen, WOW..WOW..WOW.. 2 posts in a row lol. Your on a roll, you must be on vacation, or maybe since your babies are getting ready for their naps you have more time lol... J/K ;P I was told by an importer and seller of Thai plumies, that no plumie in Thailand is an exclusive as there is so much theft as most of the growing fields are acres and acres of land, in some cases over 40 plus acres. Even if someone like JJ or Kukiat has a seedling that blooms that they own, a worker/random person/even friend of the owner may steal/get a branch or the whole plant. That is why you see so many plumies that are supposedly exclusive 1 of a kind plumies, being sold by another seller or a few from Thailand selling them on Ebay and other places and with different names. Example is Fireblast being imported and sold by BBB this season on Ebay, there is also another seller from Thailand that sells it for under 20.00 under a Thai name, not Fireblast. This seller sells legit items as I have bought from them in the past and has been on Ebay forever. A friend of mine bought hers 2 yrs ago or so from this seller in Thailand and her FB bloomed true for the past 2 seasons. With Thai Peach it was a JJ's exclusive in Thailand. Per John the Mother tree was either lost/stolen or destroyed. Since 2005, I have seen a few Thai Peaches being sold on Ebay from Thailand, but not sure it is the same as plumie photos from there look different than the ones grown here. All I know is that Sonia did more to market, sale/distribute JJ's Thai Peach than anyone else. In 2005 Sonia bought out all the Thai Peachs from John that she could find (5gal multi tipped plumies for 55.00 back then from JJ's). Sonia then resold the Thai Peach's and cuttings to other people. Thats how I got mine in 2005 (5gal was about 4ft, multi tipped) along with the Morgan's and many in the Inland Empire area. Sonia also sold stuff on Ebay, so I am pretty sure the one Lopaka has is from Sonia aka JJ's variety. As for Brads I am not sure if that is one of JJ's/Sonia's Thai Peaches. Sonia actually got the name Thai peach from the Thai Ebay sellers in 2005 as it looked like their TP, Sonia in the early years helped John with a few names for his plumies like Golden Ray, Thai Peach, Big Red and others. Since Thai Peach was a good seller and Sonia and other bought out Johns (jjs) inventory, John went to Thailand to replenish his inventory he stated that he could not find the Mother tree of TP. So since John could not replenish TP, and did not even have one for himself, what ever is currently being sold privately and @ Plumie Society sales are most likely recirculated JJ's TP from people who had it or got it from Sonia or a few who had it still. I gave a bunch of large multi tipped cuttings to Irene Jones a few years back as my tree blew over and had all these branches break. I do know that Irene was selling some at the SD Plumie Society sale recently. So again do not know if Brads is the same as JJ's. So as of current Thai peach is not commercially avail, so you will never see it at Lowes or HD. PHEW.... Good Evening to All of You, Back home and lots to do as always but need to get away sometimes. I enjoyed reading all your posts but have to agree with Luvs. I'm feeling sad and sick with the loss of Anj's little neighbor girl. Can't imagine being without my GD who is 4. She is the LIGHT of my LIFE and then some. Losing a child is a tough thing to handle and all I can say is time does help heal. It's been 33 years since we lost our son and it's hard for me to see others have to go through this. Anj, come on up and I'll not only airbrush your nails but will apply the acrylic. Do you want colored tips or french with a different color smile line or just french? haha You are so busy with the kids and it's great that you are going back to camp and being the photographer. Nice memories from our childhood huh. Makes me reminise while sitting here. We started GD in swimming lessons for 4 weeks last week and she's excited that she can float and breath under water while swimming. So fun to hear the excitement when she's done with her lesson and she's so hungry. Normally she doesn't eat much. I got to take her the first day so it was great to visit with our phone customers while waiting. DD happened to go to a pool where one little one is 3 and was jumping off the high dive. She was so impressed that she ask the mom who taught her to swim and it was one of our customers who also just started a preschool. She has taught school for years and decided several years ago to put in a pool at her home instead of renting someone else's. I have't had the time to just visit so was really behind on what was going on in her life. All of her four children have been top graduates and so it's to bad DG already has a preschool that she loves. Luvs, your nails shouldn't be real thin after having acrylics on. Some nails are more sensitive with exposure. However if they are you can help them by applying a few coats of clear until they are use to being exposed again. A couple of weeks should do it. I applied acrylic to DD toes for the summer and she loves them. I have mine airbrushed french with NIKE designs. Luvs, what will you do in Vegas while visiting? Are you taking the motorhome on this trip? I hope some year we will be able to go have more fun like that. Let us hear from you as soon as you have a computer available. Belle, sounds like you did the right thing by talking with the dad and telling him like it is. I think you get more respect when your honest and up front with whoever. You Go Girl!!! By the way your donuts are broadies here in MT.LOL Do you say soda or pop? How about the rest of you? My DH always says pop and DD says soda. I think DS says beer.LOL Cuz I'm not sure he doesn't use both when refering to that drink. Must be hard to have so many neighbors now. Did you subdivide or was it others? We still own the 100 acres by us for this reason. Don't know what will happen if the other 5 siblings ever want to sell at once. But we're prepared if it's only 2 or 3 who want out. The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier alternates two story lines and one of them is set in Antartica. The other setting, the City, gets cold towards the end. I had the thermal misfortune of having to read it in winter for a book club. But this time of the year, it should prove refreshing. Or you can come over for a visit to western Washington, where we are having a very cool summer: they said in the news this morning that 72% of the first 200 days of the year have been below average (average is 77 in July). It was only 62 degrees on Sunday (and rainy and gray). We are not happy about it, but seeing what you guys on the rest of the US are going through, we complain less... Netla, Your "heat wave" was in our news here: they said you guys were only in the 70's! I'm sorry to report that the newscasters had a laugh at that... But then they added: "That's the mentality we should embrace. In that case, like Iceland, we are having a heat wave also!". (They clarified that your temperatures are usually much lower than 70's).

Here's three more that opened this morning, but with the high heat, they'll prob fade by mid afternoon. So I thought I better capture them while I can! They are all still in one gallon pots ad in partial shade, so that may be helping a little, since they get a thorough watering every day.

Nice blooms and cute puppies!! Sounds like you're getting OUR normal summer temps. We're enjoying 80s and 90s instead of our usual 100-110 temps. Seasons seem to be changing due to the earth's axis shifting from all the natural disasters of the past several yrs. I think this is going to be the norm for us. Last summer we only had a couple of days in triple digits, whereas we normally have weeks and weeks total. This season I think we've had maybe two days so far. Makes for crispy critters, that's for sure!

What a fantastic variety of rose blooms Tammy, and the dogs look like they are having such FUN!!!! Little E loves her ball even when the weather is in the 100s, lol. But that's the nature of border collies, :P! Oh, Bless, the animals at the Shelter can really appreciate all your hard work for them!

Tammy, we too are getting recordbreaking heat as well, heat that's not been here for over a century as well. Beth, what makes us all roast in the Midwest is that we are landlocked, far away from the oceans. Where the oceans are at, at least coastal cities can get tons of coolness from summertime melting polar caps recirculating and cooling down the area. Here we have nothing but drought and terrible heat. I actually need to change my zone description too. I can grow teas now in my locale...that's how dramatic the weather change has been for us. I actually tried to change my zone a few times, but Gardenweb kicked out my changes. I will try once more. This thread reminded me to try again, lol!

Serenasyh, that's so true about the ocean breeze. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and as hot as it would get, there was always a breeze. Here. its just hot, humid, and the air is still. Even my air conditioner isn't keeping up with the heat; I have it set on 72 and the house is 78. But, regardelss of breeze, anything in the triple digits is just unbearable!

Tammy, lol! I tried 8x more to change my description to "was 5/now Z 8-Kans" and other weird abbreviations to try to override my default setting of 5 Kansas, but Gardenweb refuses to listen, haha! It holds my description on my profile, but not! in the gallery...I tried everything to change it, but no luck, lol! Well, at least my roses can tell the difference, haha! They kept breaking dormancy the entire winter long, and several of them actually sent up several leaves and brand new stems in late February too, haha! To have fully developing leaves and roses increasing in height that early is in my eyes zone 8 for sure. The only good thing about having such an early season is that I can finally grow teas with impunity, lol! But boy do I miss snow, and so does Eluane :( I always need to see a change of seasons....

Lovely roses, cute doggies and, most of all, your wonderful spirit in trying to help dogs at the shelter in what most have been very uncomfortable heat for you. You have all my respect.

Thanks for the encouraging comments about the animal shelter. It's been slow with adoptions lately, and its puppy/kitty season so the shelter is beyond capacity. We hate to turn them away, but since we're are no-kill we have to accept them based on space availability.

but anyway...the roses are my other passion, taking up about the same amount of time and care. Both hobbies are really worth the time and effort that you put into them. :)

Kate...I think I had to change my zone about 5 times before it stuck too. I really don't think I didn't anything different when it finally did update...hmm...quirky system isn't it?
