Removing yellow and old food stains from embroidered linens
Comments (21)I have become the owner of a vintage but not antique (40's maybe?) embroidered tablecloth, looks linen but I suppose could be a cotton blend. When I took it out and opened it up fully to try it on the table, I discovered that a cat had apparently mistaken the box it came in for a litter box at some point, resulting in a 6" spot on the cloth that is actually not yellow, but is rimmed in a mold/mildewy-looking ring of blackish spotting, and which smells vaguely of cat pee. The cloth is large and the embroidery is red (of course), and I haven't the place to hang the full cloth (or lay it flat) if I hand-wash the entire cloth in the tub. Is there anything I can use on the spot? Fortunately, it is small....See MoreCloth napkins that dont wrinkle?
Comments (32)I once found some Irish linen that did not wrinkle. It had something to do with the twist of the yarn, I think, as it was a plain weave. I used it for making shirts, and I pre-washed the fabric so that the shirts could be washed without further shrinkage. I took the shirts out of the washer after the spin cycle and hung them on plastic hangers to dry. They dried very quickly and needed no ironing. More recently, I have made napkins using cotton sateen, and they do not wrinkle badly either. I generally dry them on the clothesline outside and the fold them as I take them off the line. I chose cotton sateen because it is one of the best fabrics for clinging - the napkins will not slide off your lap. I make mine 18" square when finished. Comments (26)Olychick, that burlap site is cool! I thought a 30" x 60" runner would work, as it would practically cover the table top and hang down 13 inches on two sides---but it is $169! I can get the burlap and have one made with pleats at the corners for that, just not by the 14th :( But with the white cover I have ordered I think I'll run up to Atlanta this weekend and buy burlap or something else that I can just cut a 34" square from and fringe the edges. I know I can do that! Now the fun begins.... I have mostly everything in services for 12 and now we have 14, so that one table will have to have different everything. Botheration! (This is why I love to entertain at Christmas, I have enough buffet plates for the whole town!)...See MoreCleaning cloth napkins and placemats?
Comments (49)Hi, I've had great luck with Spray & Wash Stick. I usually use it right away. I keep one stick in the bath room where I undress and where there's a bit of a counter, one in the laundry - and have an extra in case . . (well, it's worked out well - having so many probably a life time supply for me). It works fine waiting some time before washing. Even works (most of the time) when an item comes out of the drier with a stain. (I deal with stains and my husband does most of the laundry.) For things like a yellowed sheet OxiClean soak usually works. For more persistent stains, I try Fels Naptha, which I think hasn't been mentioned in this discussion. I had a pile of some antique linens with stains and the Fels got them out --- found the idea from here at Garden Web. (Have the one with Purex on the label - the one with Dial is supposed to have a strong unpleasant aroma.) As far as water temp use goes ---- I find I'm fearful of using cold (will it come out clean?) and usually use some medium temp (my machine goes from cold to 85 and so up up by a few degrees through to 205. Too many choices. AND, have to say although I've been doing laundry for nearly 50 years I feel like a novice. I sometimes add some borax --- just because. And that's because of all the options. I'm learning all over again. (At least I'm past feeling that many stains just can't come out.) And will get there with the help of you all!...See MoreOutsidePlaying
