Year two for Jade cutting from huge, old plant: POA?
Comments (12)I would never water a Jade every 3-5 days..thats very bad for a Jade and will only induce rot. Especially if your Jade is small, it will tolerate even less. Those that talk about neglecting a Jade are experieced growers of this plant and know what they are talking about. This plant thrives on being neglected. To much water even with a porous soil will still be detrimental to the plant. I think this is an overly broad statement. Watering frequency simply depends on how quickly a soil dries out. I grow my small jade in a mix of equal parts fir bark, Turface, and granite grit. I water it every 3-5 days in winter because it will be bone dry within 5 days. The risk of rot is introduced when a soil holds water for too long. If it dries out in a reasonable amount of time, then there is no risk in watering when dry. Jade's are pretty vigorous plants that continue to grow during cooler months. When I repotted mine recently it was so full of roots that I had to trim half of them back. Dirtshaman's problem does sound like rot, but that is most likely caused by an overly water retentive soil. The problem many people have is that they don't realize how long moisture remains in the lower portion of their pots. A wooden shishkebab skewer poked into the soil for several minutes can be a big help in figuring this out....See More18 year old jade plant need advice pleaseee
Comments (10)Tom Using large pot and soil that does not drain freely together would cause problem with any plant. What kind of soil is it planted in? Planting jade (or any plant) so deep also creates too much shade for the lower parts of trunks/stems. If it was my plant, I would plant it much higher (almost level with the top of container). If you like to keep that container, make sure the soil drains very well. Does it have drainage hole on the bottom? Are you planning to keep it outside during summer? It will like it - if you have any outdoor area available. Don't worry much about 'butchering' it right now, that can be corrected. Most important are the growing conditions, so your plant is healthy. Cuttings are looking good, looks like there is new growth already. How long ago did you chop them off? You did right thing to keep them out of soil to callus (harden). If you plant them in soil, don't water right away as the plant without roots can't absorb water. Rina This post was edited by rina_ on Mon, Jun 17, 13 at 17:34...See MoreHuge jade plant! Comments (11)Hello stephlmccoy1, That's a very nice big Jade that someone left behind, lucky you :-). I would start by trimming off all of the branches that have any down curve to them. Take a step back after that is all done, and see what it looks like. Try to invision what you want it to look like, and go from there. Good luck, and post pictures what you decide to do!...See MoreNeed Help rooting GIGANTIC Jade cutting from 30 year old specimen
Comments (24)I'm about to cut the cuttings again (new cuttings and have some other better one on the way). I'm going to be using Al's gritty mix (assuming that's the best for this?), so should I let the turface in the bin that appears wet, sit out to dry? Also, what size pots are you folks using for these gigantic cuttings? I have some 6.7" shallow azalea pots and thought that might be a good fit for the depth and stability as well. Any thought are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the input you always give, it's highly appreciated!!!...See MoreRelated Professionals
