To prune or not to prune a 2nd year GoldRush tree?
Comments (11)Never was able to see the actual photos but fruitnut's advice sounds right to me. With Goldrush you are best off maintaining a surplus of scaffolds even when it starts bearing. Gradually thin them as tree fills out with secondary branching. Goldrush usually needs to be coaxed to spread as it bears lots of fruit on thin wood, weighs the branches down and they loose vigor. The vast majority of varieties I manage are best pruned as little as possible until trees start bearing, generally removing nothing but oversized (diameter-wise) branches. For some spurry and precoscious varieties (Goldrush, Braeburn, Empire, Ark Black) a 2-1 ratio is best but more vigorous varieties like Fuji, Northern Spy, and Baldwin are better pruned by eliminating all branches more than a third the diameter of the trunk at point of attachment. Fuji will bear earlier IME if you thin surplus scaffolds before it starts bearing because it is so vigorous and weedy that it doesn't bring adequate light to its spurs. Summer pruning helps with trees like this also. I'm talking about the third or 4th year of a semi-dwarf to standard, vigorous, not yet bearing tree....See MoreJade Tree Pruning Help Needed
Comments (11)OH MY GOSH! The jealousy is pulsing through me right now. Ditto on above. If your weather is dry right now, I doubt you'd have any trouble with any disease on the cut parts and they'd callous quickly. I don't know about rooting hormone, but I usually use a fungicide powder. Most rooting hormones have fungicide in them. I would think you could go up as high as you wanted to go. Please post follow up pics. You may need a fine saw to get the bigger branches off though. There are two different theories about how to cut something like that. If you cut about an inch away from the branch, the piece left on would rot and fall off (at least it does on a smaller version). Others would say, if you want a smooth trunk, you would cut close to the trunk and actually scoop out a little of the flesh of the main trunk so that when it heals over and forms the bark it will be smooth. If you cut it flush with the trunk and don't carve an indent in it, most trees will callous over and leave a knot on the tree. Sometimes that gives it character though. These are all bonsai theories, but I would think it would hold true of a larger tree as well. Whatever you do, please post follow up pics. I can't wait to see what happens. I don't know if you have enough friends or an e-Bay account but you could make a small fortune on these cuttings. Don't sell them like others, for a fortune, that is. I paid $18 for an 18 inch cutting with a 1 1/2 inch diameter trunk. Many people would fiend over that stuff, especially for bonsai enthusiast. I'd buy one, that's for sure....See MoreHow to grow tree-like jade plants - pruning question
Comments (15)I'm in the process of figuring out how to post a picture here. The Jade plant photo I wanted to post is 5.5mb and 5mb is Gardenweb's size limit. I think I have to change this on my camera before I shoot the picture. I thought I could change the size of the photo in my Picasa software program of pictures I've already shot, or maybe in the import process in Gardenweb's photo gallery, but I don't think I can. Once I get it figured out I'll be able to post my pictures on this website. . . Hopefully!...See MoreWhere this forum took my Jade - 1 year later [photos] - pruning ideas?
Comments (6)Hello Vlad, more natural light would also benefit the plant in many ways. If you have a sunnier spot move it gradually over the coming week as a sudden increase in strong light can burn...as you found out earlier on : / They are very resilient plants, it should now do well for you in the coming seasons, a great recovery story btw! I would nip off the top two sets of leaves now as it will soon sprout branches...that's what I would do anyway as I personally find they put forth growth at any time when stimulated by decapitating and I tend to do things sooner rather than later!.....but obviously the call is yours.
