Rosebush didn't make it? Any ideas please.

I have a Sparkle n Shine which is one of my favorite roses. I planted another one last year. Compared to all my other roses, this one has not a single bit of green on the stems. Did it perish or is there still hope? How long should I wait before thinking of replacing it with another Sparkle n Shine? Thank you for any advice!

Ditto on what Patty said...Wait until May you should see something happening by then...

I'm checking Romence Gardens to see if they are own root or grafted...I'll let you know...

In your zone Sparkle n Shine should be crown hardy. So even if the cane died it will come back from the crown. That is if it was an own root rose.

However If your rose was grafted with graft planted above ground level I’m afraid it is likely dead. cut it back as close to the grafted area as you can. If there is some clean cane left maybe there is a chance. Good luck

It came from Romence Gardens like the other one I have from them which turned out to be outstanding.. They send the biggest roses I have ever seen by delivery in a gallon pot. Are they own root? I don't know.

Sigh, you convinced me. I bought Gemini and Fragrant Plum at Jungs for half off. Actually, they were 25% off, and then I could pay for half of that with my coupons. So they were really cheap. Then I bought Jude the Obscure for 40% off at the other nursery. They didn't have Valencia anymore unfortunately or I would have gotten that one too. Evelyn was left behind once again as I decided I liked Jude better. I decided that while the color on Night Owl was nice that I wanted bigger blooms. So I have a little pot ghetto now.

The gardeners who have helped me the most (in real life, as I'm a newcomer here) are those who have the humility that comes with learning from 'mistakes' - and admitting that gardening is a work in progress with the greatest lessons learned when we get it wrong to learn why & then how to get it right. Some stories are hilarious when you look back on them (I planted a camellia bush with growth potential of 14' x 14' in a narrow border; it did grace me with surviving its inevitable transplant. What was I thinking!). It's the sharing of successess and 'mistakes' that helps everyone who comes here. Now here's a question for you: what's YOUR biggest mistake (and talk about your greatest victory, too!) Hi dryad! Soil is everything. Talking dirt takes on a whole new meaning! I'm so lucky where I live that seaweed (the almost perfect plant food which we mix into our very sandy soil (that's when it isn't rock) ) is free for the taking. After one of our many windstorms here there are many of us gardening fanatics loading up on the beaches at low tide. Sue

Tile installer said he didn't seal any of our marble - HELP!

All the marble I've had installed was sealed (and with the product of my choice). Whether that was priced as an extra or not, it was understood to be necessary and included. Marble is going to show some age, but a top notch modern sealer (I recommend Drytreat Stain Proof Plus, which is a piece of cake to use yourself) will inhibit staining for sure. Any chips, white impact marks, etching blends into the (typically busy) stone over time. I used Caesartone in one application (not a look alike) and it certainly isn't bulletproof to chips and other issues ... for the pure beauty side of things, just no comparison whatsoever to real marble ... disagree with Sophie's "know what you're getting into ... and once you do, you'll likely make another choice" words of wisdom. My fear with marble is rust bleed leaching out and generating orange spots on the stone. It's why I have avoided the use of marble in the shower where it's chronically wet. Not sure on the stacking stuff, but marble is pretty soft ... any good fabricator/tile installer can do anything with it (e.g. bullnose) without struggle. I'd pick up some Drytreat/Akemi/Bulletproof and do the sealing yourself ... very simple.

Most of Romence Gardens rose are grafted. I agree the roses they send are very nice. I used to call each year to see if any were offered own root. Sometimes they yes but usualily only roses that were offered everywhere as own roots. I don’t get to order roses thru them very often. Dr. Huey root stock does not like my soil or growing conditions.

In the future many books suggest burying the graft a few inches down even in your zone. To help the rose survive in those colder then normal winters. Either way as Jim said you’ll know in May.

I just noticed Heirloom roses has Sparkle n Shine but I hope it pulls through. It's one of my favorite roses.
