I didn't buy any roses tonight

Well, I wanted to go to a nursery I hadn't been to before to look at their Japanese Maples to get an idea of what they cost. I saw that they had roses at 40% off so I thought I might be able to get a rose too. Well, the maple I wanted was $450 so that was out of my price range. But they had Evelyn and Valencia which were both on my short list. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a good sniff (or even a good look) as there were Japanese beetles all over the roses. Sigh. Those darn beetles made rose shopping very unpleasant. I ended up not getting anything as: I have two roses from Ashdown's experiment on the back porch already, neither Evelyn nor Valencia would work in the spot I have open in the rose beds, the new rose bed hasn't been approved by DH yet and I was planning on waiting on that until next year, I shouldn't plant in the middle of July anyway, I don't really want to try to overwinter any (more) roses in pots, and finally, they were covered in beetles and I didn't want to take the JBs home with me.

Anyone else turning down sale roses that can sympathize and stop me from going back?

Not me. I would have plucked off those babies, squished them, and bought the bush. You might have gotten a better discount if you acted dumb and asked what those bugs were as you were getting ready to pay.

I would have gotten Valencia even if I had to swat bugs on the way home and put it in a pot until I had a new bed. This is the best cutting rose and most beautiful apricot color of any rose I know. It repeats frequently and the roses hold for a long time on the bush or in the vase and it blooms many blooms at one time, beautiful foliage. If you want bouquets, forget scent. If you want scent, forget the vase.

Don't panic. She's own root and even if you have to prune most of that cane off (and you do have to prune off any dead wood) she should put up some new ones this spring. It's still way too cold for that to happen though. I don't know where you are but if you aren't past your last frost date you could put some leaves around it. It's a little late but it couldn't hurt. As I said, you do have to prune off any dead wood. Starting at the top clip off a small piece and look at the center. If it's whitish/cream green it's alive. If it's dark brown or tan it isn't. Keep clipping down in small pieces until you find that whiter center. From there down it should be live cane. (I'm going to be doing a LOT of that myself this year.) It's way too early to do any pruning here but where you are it may be time. Usually a good rule of thumb is to start your pruning when the forsythias begin to bloom in your area. Being own root I'd say no, she isn't dead. But she will take time to sprout new canes from the roots so be patient. It may not happen until it gets MUCH warmer. I've had roses I was sure were dead sprout new growth as late a mid-June. They just needed more warmth for longer to wake up. You can give her some organic fertilizer but do so sparingly. You don't want to kill her with kindness. I wouldn't suggest any chemical fertilizers until you see strong new growth on her. You don't want to burn the roots. As for the neighborhood kids, maybe you should put a cage around her some how so they can't get to her. I have a bed on the edge of the street too and fencing it did help keep the kids (and dogs) out of it.

Thanks for sharing that Ron. I did not know any of those stories. They all touched me, and they made me think of many other stories there are out there. I travel a lot on my job and in pursuit of my other passion in life; trout fishing. I see men and women in uniform in almost every airport I travel to, but I particularly see many on my trips to Charlotte. Some of these folks are going "over there" (or getting ready to) and a few of them I've met were coming home. I never go by without letting these people know that many people here at home, whom they have never met, care deeply about them, worry for them, wish them a swift and safe return, and thank them for their service. I hope these people never ever want for their fellow Americans respect and concern. And I hope that if you are reading this that you will reach out to these people when you see them in your own life, shake their hand, thank them for the job they do, and let them know in some small but sincere way that you care. You'll be doing that person and yourself a great deal of good in the process.

Thanks for the ideas. I could go crazy with orange roses apparently! I think I'll have to rule out Amber Queen which does look right but I think this plant has been in the ground longer than the 80s. The previous owner thought it had been in since the greenhouse was installed in the late 50s or early 60s. The classy fence post is newer. :) What makes a climber a climber instead of something that was pruned funny? Aside from the obvious trunks, this one doesn't put out any long branches. But it's had so much "shaping" I can't tell.

That pile of poop story is one of the best stories I've ever heard! Bwahahaha! If I'm ever snippy or obnoxious, please nobody take me seriously. I'll love you again in a half second. I just come from a long line of people who would argue over poop. Like generations of folks known for their bickering, seriously. These tough old women out here who raised my dad did not hold back! Some people may be like my quirky elders that way. It's still rude (even if they'd never admit that), but it might not be meant to be actually hurtful.

Darn it, that's not helping. I might go back tonight and get Valencia, and maybe Evelyn. They also had Night Owl which looks very pretty but I don't think it will climb in zone 5 so I'm not sure what I'd do with it. Jude the Obscure had very pretty flowers too. Sigh. I was trying so hard not to end up with a pot ghetto.

Why should you be any different than the rest of us? We all have pot ghetto's, and swear we will not buy any more until those are planted.

Night Owl may not climb (although the one I planted bare-root this spring looks like it just might need direction for its canes pretty soon), but it does put out a lot of blooms.

My pot ghetto was getting down to almost a manageable level, so I went and ordered more roses on sale from Nor'East and Heirloom. They should be in anyday now. Please, please go buy those roses so I can be assured that I'm not the only one like this!

Sigh, you convinced me. I bought Gemini and Fragrant Plum at Jungs for half off. Actually, they were 25% off, and then I could pay for half of that with my coupons. So they were really cheap. Then I bought Jude the Obscure for 40% off at the other nursery. They didn't have Valencia anymore unfortunately or I would have gotten that one too. Evelyn was left behind once again as I decided I liked Jude better. I decided that while the color on Night Owl was nice that I wanted bigger blooms. So I have a little pot ghetto now.
