Please review our kitchen layout and island design
Comments (5)Thanks. It looks like I got 2 votes for option (A) - curved counter. I do have a LR/DR combo at the front of the house for formal dining. We will spend majority of the time in the family room/kitchen. We have 2 eating areas (casual table and counter/booth) because I want to have 1 are for eating dinner and the other area for spreading out homework (2 teenage kids) without having to clean up homework stuff for dinner. The house is simple modern-ish style with very open floor plan and tons of windows. If I have thought of option (C) with Island & built in banquette booth, I would change the layout of the kitchen and have banquett booth and some counter space with bar chairs. However, the walls are already up and I can't come change current floorplan - perhaps you have some thoughts and suggestions?...See MoreHad to find new builder and design new kitchen. Thoughts?
Comments (32)Thanks everyone. We met with the builder this morning and I told him I wanted to move the fridge as Greendesigns mentioned. Thinking more about that, I'm really warming to the idea. I do like the idea of big drawers in the island. When we get to the point of meeting with the cabinet folks, we'll talk to them about prices for this. Hopefully we will have the contract signed on Monday and start moving forward for real! Kirkhall, that's a good point about french doors, we'll look into that. I was concerned about frozen pizzas fitting in a side-by-side... I think we probably will keep the side of the fridge open--we're excited to have magnets and kids drawings and such covering the front and side of the fridge! Kirkhall and LL, I haven't brought up the new plan on Build for a couple of reasons: 1) I'm pretty happy with it; 2) changes are much more difficult when they have to modify a stock plan, so playing around with layouts for a marginally-improved setup is not worth it. I'll post something this weekend, hopefully, when I get a chance to put everything together so it looks right and can give an explanation that I'm not exactly looking for feedback but am wanting to share with the great community that has helped me so much....See MoreYour thoughts on the kitchen design
Comments (6)Having the DW against corner seems inconvenient to me, tough to reach over the open DW door to get to the cabinets. However, having the trash further from the corner also makes sense to me...we generate a lot of trash and having all the kids traipsing through my area to get to trash would bug me. Could it go in the island? Maybe lose one seat on the island and put trash and beverage fridge back to back?(I'd put trash where bev fridge is and bev fridge on other side.) And move DW to right of sink? It means added cost of another lower cab, and not sure how many seats you need at island. If your family is less trashy or it doesnt bother you, then I'd say yes, just switch them for sure. The island with range seems narrow to me. 9" on either side is not much space for prep stuff, thinking - egg wash bowl, bread crumb bowl, then into fry pan. No room for that. 9" isnt even really room enough to set a plate down to transfer food to. How wide are your isles? Can you get to 15" on a side? You spoke of budget in the other thread...is the venting for an island hood setup cost similar to that of an exterior wall vent hood cost? Not a professional, just a user! Good luck with your remodel, if you have never lived through a remodel, it will most likely be more painful than you expect...but worth it in the end. I heard someone describe it like childbirth, painful during, but you forget it all when you see your beautiful baby....See MoreThoughts on this kitchen design please!
Comments (63)Again great questions and suggestions! Wish we would have consulted you all earlier in this process! Guests will use the hall bath just off the back porch. That will be an unoccupied space for at least the near future so will stay presentable. This is why we put a exterior door there and part of the reason the hall extists-to give guest access to that bath. We moved the bedrooms, baths, and closets a million times trying to accomplish the following: all beds with good sized closets, jack and Jill bath bt the kids rooms, guest/MIL suite with hall access to bath, close exit to back of house from bedrooms. We are not fans of hall space either but just could not come up with an option that didn't include one and met all the above criteria. Would LOVE to have that sq FT elsewhere as we are pushing our "limit" on size. Benefitting from this thread, we are essentially redesigning the entire plan lol! So keep the ideas coming! Here is the entire plan showing the back porch area as keywest requested:See above post for revised kitchen with open pantry and improved work triangle! So remaining problems/requests/ideas to address: -eliminating banquette possibly which would require reconfiguring mud entry from back porch -better home management area (computer nook/office space) possibly in mud area, not enclosed space just a tad but bigger then what is currently drawn -ensuring island size is appropriate I am sure there is more......See Moregirl_wonder
