fireplace was leaking.. how do i get rust off the stone
Comments (2)You need a chelating agent for rust, namely oxalic acid. You can buy oxalic acid crystals where paints are sold (it's usually used as a wood bleach), or look for it on the label as an ingredient in products sold for rust stain removal, like Zud or Whink. Because stone is porous, it's always a good idea to use a poultice when removing a stain, to draw the stain up and out, instead of dissolving it deeper into the stone. Home centers sell clay powders for use as a poultice (look in the tile section), or just use corn starch. Mix some oxalic acid crystals, or the cleaning product containing the acid, with the poultice powder (say about 50/50) and enough water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stain, let it dry, and vaccuum up the dried poultice. You may have to repeat this several times. The oxalic acid chemically converts and dissolves the rust, and the poultice absorbs and removes it from the stone....See Morehow much to do stone veneers on fireplace?
Comments (1)My husband and I are also looking into redoing our fireplace with the stone veneer, we did find boxes of stone (only two colors available) at Lowes for appr.$56.00 a box for 8 square feet. They also had boxes of corner pieces available for appr.$78.00 a box, I believe covering the same sq. footage. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!!! Comments (3)Two ides for you: Pick up some One Pass at Home Depot. It's an engineered cement. You could add some of your colorant to it if you like. Mix a small quantity with a little water and fill the voids. After it dries you could wipe it down with a damp rag or sand it smooth. Second, get a quart of deep base water based paint. Don't have any colorant added. Mix a small amount of the untinted paint with your pigment until it has enough opacity to cover your patches. Use a small amount of paint on a dry brush to feather colors together....See MoreWhat can we do with this massive stone fireplace and textured walls?
Comments (12)Quite a house. Yes, the inspiration photo will work well. You'll need more substantial curtain rods. The Kaling curtains look custom (construction, installation, and color), but you can get a similar look from readymade with a length resewn by a dry cleaner who offers this service. Do you have a close up photo of the sconces over the fireplace? If you hate them, you can take them down, wrap them carefully, and store them in a box for the next owner. You can get an estimate now from a stone mason for a new fireplace, then install a new one when you are ready to remove the 1960's stone....See More- 5 years ago
